2026 Fantasy Outlook
Vasquez broke camp in the rotation and remained in the majors aside from a couple of short late-season stints with Triple-A El Paso, starting 26 of 28 outings and setting a new career high with 133.2 innings. His 3.84 ERA finished more than a run lower than both his 5.51 xFIP and 5.43 SIERA, while his 4.6 percent K-BB% ranked third-lowest among pitchers with at least 130 innings. A low .261 BABIP and a high 77.4 percent left on base rate helped keep his ERA in check. Vasquez throws six pitches, with the sweeper generating the most swinging strikes, but he relied more heavily on his less effective four-seamer, sinker, and cutter. Without a change in pitch usage, he remains a candidate for notable ERA regression and elevated fantasy risk. Read Past Outlooks
Leads Padres to first victory
Vasquez (1-0) earned the win over Detroit on Saturday, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters.
Analysis
San Diego's offense remained mostly stagnant, but Vasquez made sure that didn't matter by blanking the Tigers over his six frames. The right-hander also had his swing-and-miss stuff working, notching 13 whiffs and eight punchouts. The latter total was more than Vasquez had in all but one of his 28 outings last season, and he promisingly averaged 95.0 mph on his fastball after averaging 93.4 mph on the pitch last year. If he's able to maintain the uptick in velocity and build on Saturday's excellent start, Vasquez could prove to be a fantasy steal for managers who selected him near the end of drafts or plucked him off the waiver wire.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Vasquez came to the Padres from the Yankees as part of the Juan Soto trade last offseason, and he ended up bouncing between the minors and majors in his first year with San Diego, logging 98.0 big-league innings and 41.2 Triple-A frames. The right-hander did an adequate job at limiting walks (6.7 BB%) and tossed six quality starts among his 20 outings, but his overall numbers (4.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 62:29 K:BB) were below average. Vasquez's fastball sits at 94-95 mph -- good enough for success in the majors -- but he posted a meager 18.9% whiff rate during his time with the Padres and an even more paltry 14.4% strikeout rate (the latter number ranked in the first percentile leaguewide). Joe Musgrove is recovering from Tommy John surgery and may not pitch at all next season, which gives Vasquez a clearer path to a rotation spot, but his profile isn't one of a desirable fantasy starter.
