Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
After beginning 2025 as Miami's primary second baseman, Lopez took over for Xavier Edwards at shortstop in May, so he'll have dual-position eligibility for 2026. Lopez batted .270 with 20 steals over 117 games as a rookie in 2024, but he was unable to translate that production into a full season. However, he clubbed 15 homers last season compared to just six in 2024 and still recorded 15 stolen bases. Despite the increase in homers, Lopez's slugging percentage actually dropped nine points to .368 since he hit fewer doubles despite having 161 more plate appearances. His strong defense at a premier position should allow him to maintain a regular spot in the lineup for 2026, and that volume will be critical to Lopez's fantasy upside. The power output could be sustainable given that Lopez underperformed his .421 xSLG, and he should have a decent chance of getting back up to 20 stolen bases in 2026. If he can do that while rebounding his average, the shortstop would be a quality fantasy contributor. Read Past Outlooks
Pops first spring homer
Lopez went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays.
Analysis
The 27-year-old shortstop took Lazaro Estrada deep with two outs in the first inning, giving Lopez his first homer of the spring. After playing for Team Canada in the WBC, Lopez has just 15 Grapefruit League plate appearances, but he's collected six hits (.400 batting average) in that time with only one strikeout. Lopez is looking to build on a solid 2025 campaign in which he delivered 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 143 games.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Lopez was waived by the Giants in the first week of the 2024 season, but he was promptly picked up by the Marlins and assigned to Triple-A Jacksonville. He was called up by mid-April, initially serving in reserve capacity. Lopez hit his way into the starting lineup, which is where he stayed, other than a short IL stint for lower back inflammation. Lopez parlayed a 17.3 percent strikeout rate and a 53.6 percent groundball clip into a .270 batting average. He doesn't hit the ball hard, but 86th percentile sprint speed helped Lopez log an infield hit rate twice the league average and swipe 20 bases. He's a plus defender at second base and can play all around the infield and outfield. He'll be given a chance to be the regular second baseman but also can handle a utility role. Batting average and steals provide a floor, but unless he's playing every day, Lopez has limited fantasy allure.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
On taxi squad
Lopez joined the Blue Jays as a member of the taxi squad Sunday and could be added to the active roster if Santiago Espinal's hamstring injury requires a trip to the injured list, reports Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca.
Analysis
Lopez was briefly on the taxi squad earlier this season but has yet to see major-league action in 2023, and he's struggled at the plate for Triple-A Buffalo with a .533 OPS in 36 games. The 24-year-old went 6-for-9 with three RBI during his brief stint with the big club last year. Toronto's group of position players are in good health beyond Espinal, so Lopez would likely fill a bench role if called up.
