2024 Fantasy Outlook
By Arenado's lofty standards, his 2023 season was a disappointment. He totaled just 26 home runs, his fewest in a full season since 2014. His average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate all ranked in the bottom 40 percent of the league, per Statcast. It wasn't a disastrous season by any means as Arenado was an All-Star and still ranked above league average by most offensive measures, but it was a sizable step back from the previous year when he was an MVP finalist in the National League. The final month of the season was particularly rough as Arenado limped to the finish line with a .509 OPS in his final 17 games before back spasms ended his campaign. Despite the missed time at the end, Arenado still cleared 600 plate appearances, meaning he's now done so in each of the last eight full seasons. He's probably a future Hall of Famer and should be expected to bounce back to an extent, but his best days are likely behind him as he nears 33 years old. Read Past Outlooks
Trade possibilities to be explored
The Cardinals are expected to gauge trade interest in Arenado this month, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
President of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Wednesday that at least one of the team's four players with no-trade clauses is open to the club exploring trade interest from other teams. It seems that player is Arenado, who is owed $74 million over the next three seasons (with $10 million of that being covered by the Rockies). Arenado will turn 34 in April and fell off to a .272/.325/.394 batting line with 16 home runs in 2024, although he was a Gold Glove finalist at third base. There would figure to be plenty of interest in the eight-time All-Star even as he's coming off a down season, although trade talks will be complicated since Arenado can essentially dictate his landing spot.

Save for the pandemic season, Arenado has totaled at least 30 homers with 100 RBI every season since 2015. He posted seasons with a higher wOBA in Colorado, but his 151 wRC+ was the best of his career. Arenado's defense was again stellar. The main differences between last season and his first with St. Louis were fewer strikeouts and more walks along with better BABIP fortune. His batted ball and Statcast numbers were virtually identical. Arenado missed a career high 14 games, but most were when he served a short suspension, was on the restricted list and on paternity leave so durability remains high. Arenado had a chance to opt out of his contract, but he declined. Playing in Busch Stadium could hurt his numbers towards the end of the remaining five years he has left on his contract, but there is currently no indication of a decline. What Arenado lacks in speed, he makes up for in reliability.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could fit in Philly
Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat speculates the Phillies would be a "clear fit" for Arenado if the Cardinals trade the third baseman during the offseason.
ANALYSIS
Arenado is one of a few St. Louis players that have a full no-trade clause, but he's reportedly the only one that would prefer to be dealt this winter. The 33-year-old has three years and $52 million left on his contract, which isn't likely to scare off Philadelphia. Alec Bohm has served as the Phillies' primary third baseman for the past few years but is now on the trade block, so there could be an opening in their infield. A one-for-one swap seems unlikely since the Cardinals are entering a rebuild, and Bohm is under team control for just two more seasons.
