2026 Fantasy Outlook
Wacha was once again an effective starter for the Royals in 2025, though his results saw some regression pretty much across the board. He set career highs in starts (31) and innings (171.1) and had a 3.86 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 126:45 K:BB to go along with a 10-13 record. It was his fourth straight season with double-digit wins, but his strikeout rate dropped nearly four points to a career-worst 17.6 percent. Wacha did a great job keeping the ball in the yard with a 0.78 HR/9, which ranked 10th among qualified starters, and ranked in the 89th percentile in average exit velocity. However, a 4.20 xERA and 4.56 xFIP indicate some trouble could be in store, and he's already walking a bit of a tightrope as he relies on limiting hard contact. Wacha's fantasy ceiling is capped due to the low strikeout numbers, but he's provided a strong ERA and WHIP the past four years. It's just worth keeping in mind the underlying numbers and risk of regression as he enters his age-34 season. Read Past Outlooks
Allows six runs in loss
Wacha (5-7) took the loss Thursday against the Mets, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis
Wacha held the Mets to one run through his first four innings, but he'd unravel in the fifth, when New York would score five runs, including three with two outs. Wacha's performances have been up and down of late -- he's gone 1-5 with a 5.33 ERA in his last eight outings (49 innings). The right-hander figures to head into the All-Star break with a 3.77 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 96:34 K:BB across 19 starts (119.1 innings) this season.

Pitching for his sixth team over the last six seasons, Wacha turned in arguably the best season of his career in 2024 with the Royals. He turned in enough innings to qualify for the ERA title for the first time since 2017, and Wacha's 3.35 ERA ranked 10th on the junior circuit. Wacha was also better than ever at suppressing hard contact, turning in an average exit velocity in the 89th percentile and hard-hit rate in the 92nd percentile. The strikeouts are going to be lacking. Wacha has never had 160 of them in a season, and a likely injured list stint or two would further hinder that total. That said, Wacha has been a quality source for ERA and WHIP three years running and he returns to a pretty good situation after re-upping with Kansas City on a multi-year deal.
