2026 Fantasy Outlook
We, as fantasy managers, are going to need a new draft day joke now that both Max Muncy's are draft eligible. The difference between the two is currently like ordering a baseball jersey from MLB compared to a TikTok shop, but the fact the younger Muncy made it to the big leagues at 22 years old was impressive on its own. Making it there is one thing, staying is another. Muncy struggled mightily in his efforts to make contact but some of his batted ball events showed how he made it to the majors at such a young age. He has dual eligility on draft day, and that combined with his home park is likely to inflate his draft day cost a bit more than it should be. Muncy's 2025 numbers have some similarities to Zach Gelof's 2024 numbers, so use that recent history lesson as a guide if you decide to reach for Muncy on draft day. Read Past Outlooks
Drawing first day off of season
Muncy is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers.
Analysis
Muncy suffered a bruised hand earlier in the series when he was hit by a pitch, and the Athletics are wrapping up their four-game set versus Texas with a day game after a night game, so manager Mark Kotsay will elect to give the young infielder a breather. Darell Hernaiz will check in at third base in place of Muncy, who started in each of the Athletics' first 18 games of the season while slashing .288/.338/.485 with two home runs, two steals, 13 runs and five RBI.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Muncy's first showing at Triple-A as a 21-year-old was quite impressive last season, but a nagging hand injury limited him to 50 games in the Pacific Coast League and prevented a likely 2024 big-league debut. Muncy was drafted 25th overall out of high school in 2021, and he logged strikeout rates of 29.5 percent or higher at every early assignment of his career until he reached Double-A in 2023 and struck out at a 23.2 percent clip. Last year, he slashed .277/.374/.491 with eight home runs, four steals and a 24.6 percent strikeout rate as the second-youngest player to get 200-plus plate appearances in the PCL (behind Marlins first baseman Deyvison De Los Santos). Muncy's defensive versatility and above-average throwing arm should buy him playing time this summer for the Athletics, as he can play all over the diamond and may get a chance to prove he's the team's third baseman of the future. He isn't flashy, but Muncy has above-average power and speed, which could lead to 25-homer/15-steal steal seasons at peak.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Leading pack for third base job?
Muncy could have the best chance of the Athletics' internal options to win the third-base job next season, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
Analysis
Burke lists Muncy, Darrell Hernaiz, Brett Harris and Zack Gelof as the main competitors for the third-base gig, and he gives Muncy the best odds emerging victorious at 40 percent. Muncy slashed an uninspiring .214/.259/.379 with a 30.9 percent strikeout rate over 63 games during his rookie season, but he's just 23 and could have the most upside of the competitors at the hot corner.
