Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Yoshida's offseason shoulder surgery pushed his 2025 debut into early July, and his usage remained limited. Despite preseason plans for more time in the field, he logged only five outfield appearances and spent 44 games at designated hitter, largely facing right handers due to his platoon splits. His slugging percentage dipped to a three-year low, a common outcome after shoulder surgery, though the underlying profile was unusual. Yoshida actually showed increased contact authority compared to the prior two seasons, but a rising ground ball rate muted the results. His disciplined approach supports a stable batting average, yet his power output and run production depend on elevating the ball more consistently. Ultimately, Yoshida's playing time will depend on how the Red Sox manage their crowded outfield. Read Past Outlooks
Slated for three starts
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Yoshida will start in three of the team's next five games, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis
Yoshida has not been in the Red Sox's starting lineup for the first two games of the season, but Cora indicated that the 32-year-old will get some opportunities before long. Cora relayed that he's comfortable with Yoshida playing in left field, and when the latter does play, his presence will seemingly bump one of Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu or Roman Anthony out of the lineup. Yoshida didn't make his 2025 debut until early July while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, and he went on to slash .266/.307/.388 with four home runs and three steals across 205 plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Yoshida got caught in a numbers game in 2024 - too many lefty hitters, too many left fielders - and was a DH for all but one game. An early thumb injury had him seeking second and third opinions, and he underwent shoulder surgery following the season. In between, Yoshida was a serviceable contact hitter, slashing .280/.349/.415 with 10 home runs, 56 RBI and a 12.4 strikeout percentage. Two years into a five-year deal, the Red Sox are realizing Yoshida is not only limited defensively but doesn't hit for power, despite a higher fly-ball percentage and launch angle in 2024. He also experienced a significant drop-off against lefties, falling from a .746 OPS to .565. Boston's involvement in the failed pursuit of Juan Soto suggests the club wants a more powerful roster, particularly from the right side, and a more functional one, where manager Alex Cora can rotate players at DH.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Red Sox could still trade him
The Red Sox could be open to trading Yoshida before the start of the 2026 MLB season, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.
Analysis
Yoshida ended the 2025 regular season on a strong note with an .837 OPS over his last 20 games. However, he doesn't appear to have a role on the 2026 roster after the team acquired Willson Contreras from the Cardinals. If the Red Sox don't trade him in the spring, his playing time will be limited either in the outfield or as a designated hitter.
