2026 Fantasy Outlook
Gil's follow-up to his 2024 Rookie of the Year campaign got off to a delayed start when he suffered a lat strain in early March that sidelined him until early August. The right-hander understandably struggled in his first outing back but then fared pretty well during the remainder of the regular season, going 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over his final 10 starts. A 41:33 K:BB across 57 total innings paints a less rosy picture of Gil's performance and helps explain the vast difference between his 3.32 ERA and 4.63 FIP. Gil really struggled to get hitters to offer at his non-strikes, finishing with a chase rate that ranked in the first percentile leaguewide. His whiff rate also fell from 29.0 percent in 2024 to 21.5 percent last season, and his strikeout rate suffered a precipitous drop from 26.8 percent to just 16.8 percent. It's likely that Gil's extended absence contributed to his poor peripherals, though it remains to be seen if his out-of-nowhere ROY campaign ends up being his peak. The Yankees will be getting Gerrit Cole back next season and got promising campaigns from youngsters Cam Schlittler and Will Warren, so Gil's spot in the rotation isn't guaranteed. Read Past Outlooks
Plagued by long ball in no-decision
Gil took a no-decision Wednesday against the Angels, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five.
Analysis
Following a shaky season debut against the Rays, Gil struggled once again Wednesday. Control remained an issue -- the right-hander walked multiple batters in his second straight outing and threw just 48 of his 83 pitches for strikes -- and three of his hits allowed were home runs. Gil has now coughed up seven runs on eight hits (four homers) and five walks over his first nine innings, so he shapes up as a volatile fantasy option next week versus Boston.

Last spring, not many had Gil on their list of top AL Rookie of the Year candidates, but he has some hardware to display on his mantle. His award-winning campaign was driven by a 0.70 ERA in May (3.01 xFIP). His ERA was 4.00 or higher in four of the six months, with three months of an xFIP over 4.35. His season-long 4.36 xFIP and 4.22 SIERA warn of a correction from a 3.50 actual mark. A low .237 BABIP and a high 78.8 percent left on base mark are candidates to regress. Gil can fend off regression by lowering a high 12.1 percent walk rate. His 26.8 percent strikeout rate was 14th highest among pitchers with at least 150 innings, but his K-BB percentage was just 39th. Pitchers usually improve control the second season removed from Tommy John surgery, so optimism is warranted, just remember he's also due a visit from the regression monster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expected to join MLB roster
Gil is expected to join the Yankees at some point next week, manager Aaron Boone told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com on Saturday.
Analysis
Gil will make a start at the Triple-A level Sunday, and that would line him up to make his season debut against the Rays on Friday. Gil didn't make the Opening Day roster because the Yankees had a four-man rotation due to several days off early in the schedule, but Gil is expected to serve as the Yankees' fifth starter moving forward.
