2026 Fantasy Outlook
Fantasy managers have wondered over the years what Nootbaar could do with a full, healthy season. He didn't quite have a full season in 2025 - missing three weeks around midseason with a ribcage injury - but Nootbaar's 135 games and 583 plate appearances were easily career highs. Unfortunately, he turned in his worst offensive season to date, finishing with just a .686 OPS and wRC+ of 96. The good news is that the batted-ball metrics that have made Nootbaar so intriguing were still there, as he sported a career-best 50 percent hard-hit rate, a 10.2 percent barrel rate and a 91.3 mph average exit velocity. It still feels like Nootbaar is one tweak away from unlocking a big year, but he's now 28 and has never hit more than 14 home runs, driven in more than 48 runs or batted higher than .261. He had offseason surgery to shave down deformities on both heels -- a condition he admits to have dealt with for multiple seasons -- and it's unclear whether his 2026 readiness will be affected. If there's a silver lining, it's that Nootbaar's draft-day cost should be quite affordable. Read Past Outlooks

Nootbaar is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Kansas City.
Analysis
Since he returned from the injured list earlier this month, the left-handed-hitting Nootbaar has been out of the lineup each of the three times the Cardinals have faced a traditional lefty starter. However, it could be more about picking spots to rest Nootbaar following a long layoff than it is about him being in a platoon. Nelson Velazquez will play left field for St. Louis in the series opener.

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2023
Injuries were a problem again for Nootbaar in 2024, as he was limited to just 109 games because of a fractured rib and strained oblique. He's now made five trips to the injured list since the beginning of the 2023 campaign. Nootbaar also saw his ground ball rate rise again in 2024 to a career-high 51.7 percent. Those are the main two factors as to why he's never hit more than 14 home runs in a season even as his quality of contact (49.5 percent hard-hit rate, 9.9 percent barrel rate in 2024) point to a guy who should be a 20-plus homer guy. That said, between the batted-ball data and elite walk rate, Nootbaar still brings interesting skills to the table if he can ever put together a full, healthy season.
Nootbaar made three trips to the injured list in 2023 due to thumb, back and abdominal issues. Those injuries limited him to 117 games and 503 plate appearances, but when available he was impressive with the bat, totaling 14 homers and 11 steals to go with a .261 average. The outfielder showcased an impressive eye at the plate with a 14.3 BB% and 19.7 K%, nearly identical to his 2022 marks. The slugging lags behind the rest of his offensive game a bit -- his SLG fell to just .418 last season -- but Nootbaar does enough well across the board to warrant a high level of interest in mixed leagues that require five starting outfielders. Given that he had a dramatic lefty/righty platoon split (200 points of OPS to be exact), it would make sense if the Cardinals sat him occasionally against tough southpaws. Even so, Nootbaar could in theory approach 600 plate appearances with better luck on the health front while rotating between the three outfield spots for St. Louis.
Was this Cardinals' Devil Magic or just good development by St. Louis? Nootbaar inched his way up the organizational depth chart since entering the organization in 2018 and has shown an ability to hit for average and get on base in the minors but that did not initially translate into the same success at the big-league level. He certainly accepted his walks as a rookie in 2021, but he has not yet hit for average in nearly 500 plate appearances at the big-league level. He did, however, show surprising power in 2022, banging out nearly as many homers (18 between Triple-A and MLB) than he had from 2018-21 (20.) The StatCast sliders show plenty of bright Cardinal Red in many of the right places, but things get funky when you dive into the splits and see 13 of his 14 homers came against righties. However, Nootbaar hit .217 against righties and .273 against lefties when left in there to face them. He had similar R/L splits in 2021 but no such troubles in Triple-A, so it could be a small case of reverse splits. Either way, he is trending in a very good direction and has gone from 2022 deep sleeper to 2023 potential five-category producer if that average against righties adjusts.

Target for Diamondbacks?
OFSt. Louis Cardinals
June 4, 2026
Nootbaar, who is on the injured list with a heel injury, is one of several left-handed hitters the Diamondbacks could target ahead of the trade deadline, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Analysis
The Diamondbacks are widely expected to add another left-handed bat before the trade deadline, and the team will have roughly two months to assess the market and see which players might be available. It's unclear whether the Cardinals will be sellers at the deadline, but if they are, there could be tons of interest in acquiring Nootbaar, who is on the cusp of his season debut after offseason heel surgery.
