2026 Fantasy Outlook
After playing second base almost exclusively since making his MLB debut in 2011, the Astros elected to test out Altuve in left field in 2025, though he ended up making just 47 appearances there compared to 66 at second base and 49 at designated hitter. The veteran's defense at the keystone has been subpar for years, and that continued in 2025 with minus-8 DRS while he also posted minus-10 DRS in the outfield. Father Time also appears to be catching up to Altuve at the plate, with his .265 average and .771 OPS being his worst marks since the shortened 2020 campaign. Still, he clubbed 26 homers and stole 10 bases, with that steals total being a sizable drop after he averaged 18 over the previous three years. Altuve should retain a regular spot in Houston's lineup to begin 2026, but his days with an elite average and being a 20-20 threat could be behind him as he enters his 16th season in the big leagues. He's again likely to be a solid contributor, but at this stage of his career the danger of a precipitous decline is inherent. Read Past Outlooks
Resting up Sunday
Altuve is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.
Analysis
Altuve will be rested for a second straight Sunday in what's presumably part of a load management plan following his return from an oblique strain. Brice Matthews will cover second base and bat seventh in the series finale.

Altuve was an everyday presence in the lineup last season after being limited to 90 games in 2023, though he wasn't as productive at the plate with a .789 OPS being his worst full-season mark since 2013. He still delivered 20 homers and 22 steals, which was his best work on the basepaths in seven years, but it's fair to wonder if Father Time is starting to catch up to him. Altuve will turn 35 years old in May, and it's worth noting that his .264 xBA and .406 xSLG were each 30-plus points lower than the actual figures. He has significantly outperformed those expected stats throughout his MLB career, but it's more of a concern as he moves through his mid-30s. Altuve is still a decent bet for a high batting average, another 20-20 campaign and strong counting stats in 2025, but the risk of a fall-off is increasing with each passing season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Should be ready for spring training
Altuve underwent a minor procedure on his right foot Monday but is expected to be fully healthy for spring training, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Analysis
Altuve played through foot discomfort in the final stages of the 2025 season, so there's a chance this minor procedure is related to that, as McTaggart described it as a minor skin aspiration. Altuve hit 26 homers while slashing .265/.329/.442 across 155 regular-season games in 2025, but his numbers are beginning to trend in the wrong direction compared to the prime of his career when he was a perennial MVP candidate.
