Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Mateo has an outside shot at a regular job to start the season, as Atlanta signed him to a big-league deal one day after it was revealed Ha-Seong Kim (finger) would miss the first six-plus weeks of the season. Mateo, even at 30, is still one of the fastest players by sprint speed in baseball. Baltimore declined the club option on Mateo after a disappointing 2025 season which included him rehabbing from an internal brace procedure on his non-throwing arm and a hamstring strain which put him on the 60-day IL over the summer. Mateo's work since the back to back 30+ steal season has been non-rosterable in mixed leagues while even AL-Only leagues had to work hard to justify carrying this one-trick pony on their rosters after 2022. Mateo has enjoyed just one full season of work at the big league level, and even that was tough to carry with his .221 average and .267 OBP that season. He will earn in-season flexibility, but he is only eligible at second base on draft day. Mateo will compete with Mauricio Dubon and Nacho Alvarez for playing time while Kim is sidelined. Analysis
The veteran utility player will provide some extra depth at shortstop behind Mauricio Dubon while Ha-Seong Kim (finger) is on the IL. Mateo has stolen double-digit bases in each of the last five seasons despite inconsistent playing time -- he went 15-for-17 on the basepaths in 2025 despite seeing just 83 plate appearances for the Orioles.

Mateo was a fantasy darling in 2022 when he hit 13 home runs and led the American League in steals with 35. Predictably, his role with the Orioles has diminished over the past two years as the team has reopened its competitive window. His 2024 season was cut short by an elbow injury which required UCL reconstruction surgery in August, and it's possible he's not ready for the start of spring training. Mateo is a good player, but simply put, he is not the type of player that clears 500 plate appearances on a contender. The 29-year-old has a .270 OBP over parts of five major-league seasons. Perhaps a move to another rebuilding club leads to a volume-driven resurgence, but in his current situation Mateo has limited appeal.

Option likely to be declined
The Orioles are expected to decline Mateo's $5.5 million club option for 2026, reports Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com.
Analysis
The 30-year-old was limited to 43 games in 2025 due to elbow and hamstring injuries, and he was unproductive when healthy with a .177/.217/.266 slash line and 36.1 percent strikeout rate. Mateo provides some defensive versatility and plenty of speed on the basepaths with a 162-game average of 35 steals during his MLB career, which should help him compete for a part-time role somewhere in 2026.
