2025 Fantasy Outlook
Triolo surprisingly claimed the starting second base job out of spring training in 2024, beating out Liover Peguero and Ji Hwan Bae for the role. He was ultimately displaced by Nick Gonzales but stuck in the majors for the entirety of the season and logged 446 plate appearances while filling in for Ke'Bryan Hayes at third base. Triolo's value in the majors comes almost entirely from his glove, which is evident from his 86 wRC+ and .099 ISO across 655 career plate appearances. In addition to the lack of power, Triolo doesn't check any other box for fantasy production, as his career 27.6 percent strikeout rate has held him to just a .242 batting average. Triolo has had some success on the basepaths with 14 stolen bases across 16 attempts. However, his inability to get on base consistently will prevent him from racking up enough bags to overcome the rest of the deficiencies in his profile in more standard mixed leagues. On the other hand, Triolo should find a decent amount of playing time due to his defensive versatility and ability, so he could be a reasonable depth option in NL-only or extremely deep mixed leagues. Just two starts through five games
Triolo is on the bench for Monday's game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Though he appeared to have a chance at seeing steady playing time at first base to begin the season while Spencer Horwitz (wrist) is on the shelf, Triolo has started just twice through the Pirates' first five games, with one of those coming at third base. Endy Rodriguez has instead emerged as the preferred option at first base and should handle a near-everyday role while moving between that position and catcher.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Despite being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft, Triolo never carried much prospect pedigree or hype. That's because Triolo's carrying tool is his defense, as he's played every position along the infield since joining the organization. That set him up well to take advantage of openings along the team's infield in a utility role, and he did just that to close 2023 by playing 35 games at second base, 13 at second base, seven at first base and one at DH in his first sample in the majors. That versatility could also mean he maintains a role in 2024, but the question then becomes whether that will make him fantasy relevant. Across any significant sample in the minors, Triolo never posted an ISO above .176 and that mark was just .099 in 209 plate appearances with Pittsburgh. That lack of power will put a lot of pressure on his hit and speed tools. Triolo regularly hit above .280 in the minors, and it appears that success carried over after his promotion. However, his strikeout rate spiked to 30.1 percent and he relied on a .440 BABIP to hit .298 with the Pirates. That's a concerning sign for his batting average potential, but if he can secure an everyday role and get on base (11.5 BB% in majors), Triolo should be a source of stolen bases. He had consistent success in that regard in the minors and then stole six of seven bags successfully upon reaching the majors. That was backed by a 77th percentile sprint speed, leaving stolen bases as his primary path to fantasy relevance.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Excels after tweaking stance
Triolo adjusted his batting stance in mid-September, per Justice delos Santos of MLB.com, and the infielder posted a .444/.545/.733 slash line over his final 13 games of the season.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old had just three extra-base hits in 136 at-bats before sitting out back-to-back games Sept. 15 and 16, but he returned to the lineup on the 17th with more of an upright stance and clubbed seven doubles and two homers during the final two weeks of the campaign. He doesn't have the prospect pedigree of other Pirates rookies that debuted this season, but Triolo made a strong first impression in the majors and should have every opportunity to earn a starting spot during spring training, especially if he's able to build on his strong finish to 2023.
