2026 Fantasy Outlook
Triolo is widely regarded as an elite defender with little to offer with his bat, and the start of the 2025 season reinforced that. He primarily served in a reserve role, picking up spot starts across the infield while producing little at the plate. However, he got an opportunity to serve as Pittsburgh's primary third baseman after Ke'Bryan Hayes was dealt at the trade deadline, and that sample produced some interesting results. Across 216 plate appearances and 52 games in the second half, Triolo hit .276 with four home runs,14 RBI and 29 runs scored - good for a .340 wOBA and 117 wRC+. He also chipped in 13 stolen bases for the season, backed by 85th percentile sprint speed, per Statcast. Triolo's overall numbers from 2025 and his career sample both suggest that this was a short run of success. However, his defense will be enough to keep him in the majors and potentially even with a regular role. If he opens 2026 with consistent plate appearances, he'll be worth monitoring on waiver wires in deeper formats to see if he can carry his success from the second half of 2025 into the new campaign. April 16, 2026
Triolo (knee) is scheduled to resume running the bases next week, Jason Mackey of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Triolo has already been doing all other baseball activities and is set to take a big step next week when he runs the bases. The utility infielder is less than two weeks removed from going down with a patellar tendon injury in his right knee but looks to be making swift progress. A timetable for his return could become clearer after he runs the bases next week.

Stat Review
How does Jared Triolo compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Triolo surprisingly claimed the starting second base job out of spring training in 2024, beating out Liover Peguero and Ji Hwan Bae for the role. He was ultimately displaced by Nick Gonzales but stuck in the majors for the entirety of the season and logged 446 plate appearances while filling in for Ke'Bryan Hayes at third base. Triolo's value in the majors comes almost entirely from his glove, which is evident from his 86 wRC+ and .099 ISO across 655 career plate appearances. In addition to the lack of power, Triolo doesn't check any other box for fantasy production, as his career 27.6 percent strikeout rate has held him to just a .242 batting average. Triolo has had some success on the basepaths with 14 stolen bases across 16 attempts. However, his inability to get on base consistently will prevent him from racking up enough bags to overcome the rest of the deficiencies in his profile in more standard mixed leagues. On the other hand, Triolo should find a decent amount of playing time due to his defensive versatility and ability, so he could be a reasonable depth option in NL-only or extremely deep mixed leagues.
Despite being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft, Triolo never carried much prospect pedigree or hype. That's because Triolo's carrying tool is his defense, as he's played every position along the infield since joining the organization. That set him up well to take advantage of openings along the team's infield in a utility role, and he did just that to close 2023 by playing 35 games at second base, 13 at second base, seven at first base and one at DH in his first sample in the majors. That versatility could also mean he maintains a role in 2024, but the question then becomes whether that will make him fantasy relevant. Across any significant sample in the minors, Triolo never posted an ISO above .176 and that mark was just .099 in 209 plate appearances with Pittsburgh. That lack of power will put a lot of pressure on his hit and speed tools. Triolo regularly hit above .280 in the minors, and it appears that success carried over after his promotion. However, his strikeout rate spiked to 30.1 percent and he relied on a .440 BABIP to hit .298 with the Pirates. That's a concerning sign for his batting average potential, but if he can secure an everyday role and get on base (11.5 BB% in majors), Triolo should be a source of stolen bases. He had consistent success in that regard in the minors and then stole six of seven bags successfully upon reaching the majors. That was backed by a 77th percentile sprint speed, leaving stolen bases as his primary path to fantasy relevance.
Triolo was a third-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, though he's never been a particularly highly-regarded prospect. His defense was his standout tool, and he's stuck at both third base and shortstop while progressing through the Pirates system. While his bat lags behind his fielding, Triolo has had a wRC+ at least 10 percent above-league average at every level he's played, most recently posting a 121 wRC+ at Double-A Altoona in 2022. That does require the context that Triolo played three seasons in college and will first reach Triple-A at the age of 25. That said, the clock is ticking for him to reach the major leagues, particularly given the strength of the Pirates' infield prospects that are equally close to the majors such as Liover Peguero and Nick Gonzales.

In line for everyday shortstop role

March 23, 2026
Pirates manager Don Kelly said Sunday that he plans to use Triolo as the team's everyday shortstop to begin the season, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "Just feel like he's been so good at short in his limited time last year," Kelly said of Triolo. "He's good anywhere you put him. But just felt like being a shortstop, having him there when he's on the field is really important."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could fill utility role
3BPittsburgh Pirates
December 21, 2025
According to John Perrotto of PittsburghBaseballNow.com, Pirates GM Ben Cherington said that Triolo is "going to get his work everywhere -- second, short[stop] or third."
Analysis
The 27-year-old worked as Pittsburgh's primary third baseman after Ke'Bryan Hayes was traded to Cincinnati at the summer deadline but profiles better as a utility infielder. That being said, Triolo could be heavily involved at the hot corner again in 2026 if the Pirates don't make another significant offseason addition. Triolo had a .227/.311/.356 slash line with seven homers and 13 stolen bases in 107 games last season.
