2026 Fantasy Outlook
Del Castillo was limited during the first half of 2025 by injuries (back, shoulder) and played just 14 games at Triple-A Reno (and another 14 on rehab assignment). He eventually joined Arizona following the All-Star break, mostly serving as a DH or pinch hitter. After a strong showing at the plate in his first taste of the majors in 2024, Del Castillo dropped to a .682 OPS last season, although he produced at Reno. The organization's goal was for him to continue to develop his defensive skills, but Del Castillo played just 16 games behind the plate across all three locations. That negates any thoughts that he could serve as a backup to Gabriel Moreno in 2026, so Arizona re-signed James McCann to be the primary backup. That doesn't mean Del Castillo will return to Reno, however; the lefty-hitter could serve as the primary DH against right-handers. Read Past Outlooks
Status in doubt for Opening Day
Del Castillo said Monday that he expects to be sidelined for around one month due to his left calf injury, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis
While Del Castillo is hopeful that he'll be able to play in at least one Cactus League game or exhibition before the beginning of the regular season, the extended time he'll miss this spring could end up costing him a spot on the Opening Day roster. Arizona is expected to head into the season with Gabriel Moreno and James McCann as its top two catchers, so Del Castillo would merely provide a third option at the position and would likely see most of his playing time at designated hitter. Because the 26-year-old still has a pair of minor-league options remaining, the Diamondbacks may prefer to option Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno, which would allow him to play on a more regular basis once he overcomes the calf issue.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Del Castillo was already having a breakout year at Triple-A Reno by the time he showed up in Arizona and acquitted himself well in 25 games while filling in for an injured Gabriel Moreno. The organization's Minor League Player of the Year, Del Castillo posted a 1.002 OPS and 26 homers in 2024 at Reno. Power numbers in the hitter-smooching Pacific Coast League are always taken with circumspection, but Del Castillo's jump from 2023 to 2024 was comical. He gained more than 300 points of OPS, 64 points of average and dropped his strikeout rate 12 points. Against MLB pitching, Del Castillo slashed .313/.368/.525 with four home runs in 87 plate appearances - and a much higher strikeout rate than he had in the minors. His bat may be able to carry him in the majors, but Moreno is entrenched as the No. 1 catcher, and Arizona may want a better defensive option as a backup.
