Sammy Smith

21-Year-Old Driver
JR Motorsports
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Smith will return for another season at JRM in the No. 8 Chevrolet. The young driver had arguably his best campaign to-date in the O'Reilly Series in 2025. Smith would grab his third-career victory (Rockingham) and 18 Top-10 finishes en route to a steady eight-place points finish and 14.0 average finish for the season. Those are top marks and ones to build on for Smith and this race team. He'll have to do it with a new crew chief as Phillip Bell is gone and Cory Shea replaces him atop the team's war wagon. The two will look to forge chemistry quickly as the season kicks off in Daytona. The hope is that Smith and this race team can discover the ingredients to their first multi-win season together. Third in Focused Health 250
O'Reilly Auto Parts Series
February 28, 2026
Smith finished third in the Focused Health 250 O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Circuit of The Americas on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Smith would start 10th on the grid and battle among the Top 10 for most of the race Saturday at COTA. The driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet didn't lead any laps but he'd turn in his best performance of the young season in this race. Smith would hold off a very fast Jesse Love to claim an impressive third-place in the Focused Health 250. It was his second Top-5 finish of the season.

2025
2024
2023
Smith once again produced results for JR Motorsports in 2024. The young driver didn't advance as far into the championship hunt as he would have liked, finishing 11th-place in the final standings. However, Smith would nail down his second-career victory and nab a respectable 16 Top-10 finishes. He would make the No. 8 Chevrolet team very competitive in that regard. His crew chief situation has not been announced at the time of this writing. Adam Wall was in that position for most of last season but he would finish the campaign with Phillip Bell in the last 10 events. We'll need some clarification on this prior to the start of the season to get a sense of where this team and driver are going. At 20-years-old Smith has budding potential and could easily climb the driver standings in 2025.
The 19-year-old had a great rookie campaign with Joe Gibbs Racing last season. Smith would grab one win and 15 Top-10 finishes to wind up last year at sixth in the final driver standings. Even after those initial successes, Smith would be on the move. He'd sign a deal with JR Motorsports to drive Josh Berry's No. 8 Chevrolet as the veteran moves up to the Cup Series full-time in 2024. Smith showed just a sample of his talent in his first full Xfinity Series campaign, now we'll get to see what the shift to JRM will do for his second full season. Berry was not Earth-shattering in this same car last season, but we only have to look back to 2021 and 2022 to see five combined victories for Berry in this same car. JRM will give Smith the tools to succeed, and at just 19-years-old, there's a lot of raw and untapped potential in this young driver.
Smith made a successful, part-time debut in this car in the Xfinity Series last season. Now he gets the full-time driver promotion at JGR and will take over the No. 18 Toyota full-time. With that will come all the money, sponsors and resources an 18-year-old driver needs to succeed. Smith nabbed just three Top 10's in his nine starts last season, but gained valuable seat time and experience. He's been a race winner and champion in the lower divisions of NASCAR, so Smith has the driving talent. This transition will take a bit, but he should begin to get some traction early in the upcoming season. Smith and crew chief Jeff Meendering make an intriguing combination.
