Paye and the Raiders agreed on a three-year, $48 million contract Monday that includes $32 million guaranteed, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Paye spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Colts after being selected by the team in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He recorded at least 8.0 sacks in consecutive seasons from 2023 to 2024 but saw his numbers dip in 2025, finishing with 39 tackles (15 solo), including 4.0 sacks, and one pass defense across 17 regular-season games. Paye will join a Raiders defensive front that will look significantly different in 2026 after Maxx Crosby (knee) was traded to the Ravens on Friday.

Paye has the usage of a pass-rush specialist, but he lacks the production that should go along with it. He recorded a career-high 12 quarterback hits in 2024, a very underwhelming number when considering he was on the field for 395 opponent pass attempts. The Colts have sent mixed messages about his potential role with the team in 2025. They exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, yet also seemed to prepare for his departure by selecting JT Tuimoloau in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Paye should hold the advantage in projected role for the time being, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Paye lose snaps as the season progresses if his performance doesn't pick up.
Paye solidified himself as one of the Colts' more exceptional defensive players in 2023, setting a new career-best sack threshold. He recorded career highs across the board, with 52 combined tackles, including 8.5 sacks. He also forced and recovered two fumbles. The 2021 first-round pick could be a candidate to reach double-digit sacks with another year in defensive coordinator Gus Bradley's scheme, as Indianapolis' defense as a whole ranked fifth in the NFL with 51 sacks in 2023.
Paye continued to improve in his second season as he posted six sacks and 45 tackles in 12 games. After playing a reserve role as a rookie, Paye moved into the starting lineup in 2022, but injured his ankle in Week 5, missing five of the next seven games. He then played his final four games on an ankle that wasn't at full strength. Now that he's set to reprise his starting role at defensive, he could produce double-digit sacks with better health.
Paye, the 21st overall pick in the 2021 draft, looks set to start at defensive end and build on a productive rookie season. He had just four sacks but was second on the team with 39 QB pressures (per PFF). He should improve his sack totals this season.
In selecting Paye in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 21st overall, the Colts added one of the best pass rushers in this draft class. The Michigan product has the frame (6-2, 261) to hold up against the run and boasts athleticism as well, running a 4.57-second 40-yard dash. He projects to play with his hand in the ground in Indianapolis' 4-3 scheme.

Unlikely to re-sign
DEIndianapolis Colts
January 12, 2026
Paye isn't likely to return to the Colts in free agency next season, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
The 21st overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Paye managed a career-high 8.5 sacks in 2023 but saw his production fall to just 4.0 sacks this past season. With the Colts expected to rebuild their defensive line around Laiatu Latu and a hopefully healthy DeForest Buckner, Paye will have to look for a second contract elsewhere.
