Gets new backup
The Panthers are signing Rico Dowdle to replace Miles Sanders (free agent) as Hubbard's backup, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hubbard and Dowdle both were lead backs last year, but there doesn't seem to be any doubt about whose show it will be in 2025, considering the former signed a four-year, $33.2 million extension. Dowdle settled for a one-year deal with a reported base value of $3 million, which suggests NFL teams view him as a backup-caliber player even after he ran for 1,079 yards in Dallas last year. Hubbard is the better pure runner, and generally a superior player, but it is possible he cedes more of the backfield work in 2025 (compared to last season) if Carolina's coaches like Dowdle more than they liked Sanders. There's no indication Hubbard's calf and knee injuries from the end of 2024 will be a problem for the upcoming season, whereas 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks figures to miss significant time after tearing his right ACL for the second time in two years.

Hubbard did the improbable and sent Miles Sanders to the bench last year even after Carolina gave the former Eagle a four-year, $25.4 million contract. Hubbard didn't exactly set the league on fire, averaging 3.8 yards per carry, but he was mostly impressive when you factor in how bad the Panthers offense was. Even with his 2023 accomplishments noted, Hubbard's fantasy value took a major hit when the Panthers made Jonathon Brooks (knee) the first running back selected in the 2024 Draft. The Panthers took Brooks at No. 46 overall with the intention of making him their starting running back at some point, though not necessarily right away as he completes his rehab from an ACL tear suffered in November. While solid as a runner, Hubbard is particularly vulnerable to Brooks on passing downs. Hubbard has improved his pass catching considerably since dropping seven of 37 targets as a rookie, but it's still a relative weakness for him and a strength for the incoming rookie.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Team signs backfield competition
Hubbard will face competition for carries from Rico Dowdle, whom the Panthers signed to a one-year, $2.7 million contract Wednesday, per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer.
ANALYSIS
Both Hubbard and Dowdle are coming off career-best seasons. Hubbard ran for 1,195 yards and 10 touchdowns in 15 games before knee and calf injuries landed him on injured reserve to close out the 2024 campaign. Dowdle rushed for 1,079 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games with the Cowboys. The Panthers also have Jonathon Brooks on the roster, but the 2024 second-round draft pick will miss most or all of the 2025 season due to a torn ACL he suffered in December.
