Fiesta Bowl: Mississippi vs. Miami (7:30 p.m. Jan. 8)

These teams arrived at the CFP semifinals by slaying some past demons – one from just a few months ago and one from a time when most players on the roster were not even born.

The Mississippi Rebels survived a thrilling Sugar Bowl with a field goal in the final seconds to extend a chaotic run without head coach Lane Kiffin.

Under new coach Pete Golding, Mississippi knocked off Georgia, 29-24, to avenge its only loss this season, erasing a 21-12 halftime deficit in a thriller in New Orleans. In the regular season, the Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 17-0 in the fourth quarter to win 43-35 on Oct. 18 in Athens. The college football odds were stacked against the Rebels in the rematch.

But in the Sugar Bowl, Trinidad Chambliss (above) threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns to drive Ole Miss to a comeback, capped when Lucas Carneiro hit a 45-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining.

The Miami Hurricanes kept their CFP run going by upsetting the team that had been the college football betting favorite to win the national title when the Playoff began.

UM downed No. 2 seed and reigning national champion Ohio State 24-14 in the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday, with running back Mark Fletcher Jr. gaining 90 yards on 19 carries and hauling in a 9-yard touchdown catch from Carson Beck in the second quarter.

No current players remember when OSU defeated Miami in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl to win the national title, but it was on the minds of fans and alums when the Canes ousted the Buckeyes this time around.

AI projections peg Ole Miss as the favorite to reach the CFP final, winning six out of 10 simulated games against the Hurricanes. But FanDuel Sportsbook has installed Miami as the early favorite, by 2.5 points, as of Jan. 2.

Peach Bowl: Indiana vs. Oregon (7:30 p.m., Jan. 9)

This is a rematch from the regular season between Big Ten rivals, with bigger stakes on tap in Atlanta.

The Hoosiers announced themselves as a national title contender the last time these teams met, on Oct. 11 in Eugene.

In that game, Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza threw for 215 yards and a touchdown, leading the Hoosiers to a statement-making 30-20 win over the Ducks. IU also intercepted Dante Moore twice, the only multi-INT game Moore had in the regular season (he also threw two in the first round of the Playoff against James Madison).

Customers using the BetMGM bonus code can get Oregon as a 4-point underdog for the Peach Bowl.

In our projections, Indiana holds a 6-4 edge after 10 simulated outcomes. IU has averaged 41.6 points per game, third in the country, and seventh in total offense (468.1 yards per game) The Ducks are sixth in scoring defense (15.1 points allowed per game, including a shutout of Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl) and sixth in total defense (allowing 267.4 ypg).

Indiana, behind Heisman Trophy winner Mendoza, is the new national title favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook with +135 odds. The Hoosiers are followed by Miami (+300), Oregon (also +300) and Mississippi (+550).
