Earns promotion
The Marlins promoted Mesa from High-A Jupiter to Double-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
After a two-year layoff from organized baseball while he defected from Cuba, Mesa understandably hasn't posted standout production in his first season in affiliated ball. The 23-year-old managed a lowly 73 wRC+ for the duration of his stay in Jupiter, but the Marlins felt he was deserving of a callup in light of his recent form at the plate over the past month. Since June 30, Mesa submitted a .321/.342/.358 slash line (109 wRC+) while stealing six bases in as many attempts.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Mesa, who goes by Victor Victor in an effort to distinguish himself from his father, Victor Mesa Sr. -- a baseball legend in Cuba -- signed in October with the Marlins for $5.25 million, the largest bonus in the 2018 international signing class. He immediately became Miami's best prospect by a wide margin. While his reported physical tools (50-grade raw power, 70-grade speed) at the time of his signing are comparable to recent high-profile outfield signees out of Cuba (Luis Robert, Lazaro Armenteros, Julio Pablo Martinez), Victor Victor's hit tool is seen as a strength, not a cause for concern, as was the case with that aforementioned trio. He should be a plus defender in center field, and has drawn comparisons to Victor Robles, given his defensive tools, potential to hit for a high average, steal 25-plus bases and chip in double-digit home runs. The 22-year-old could be sent directly to High-A for his debut season, and should reach the majors in 2020 or 2021.

Set to play in AFL
Mesa will play for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old still has yet to hit a homer in pro baseball but moved up to Double-A this season. He's hitting .194/.218/.214 in 104 plate appearances for Jacksonville, though, after generating just a .252/.295/.283 line in High-A Jupiter. A player his age putting up those numbers when he's among the oldest at each level is a bit disconcerting, but his speed (15 steals at Jupiter) and his enticing talent in the field will allow Miami to slow-play his development if desired. Playing against older talent in the AFL may help him get useful work in the offseason.
