2026 Fantasy Outlook
Black, who has one minor-league option year remaining, is still hanging onto his 40-man roster spot with the Brewers, but it's tough to envision him providing enough value to get notable playing time in 2026 at the big-league level. Black has always been an OBP machine, and he even has a career .357 OBP in the majors despite performing below replacement level (-0.1 fWAR) in 70 plate appearances. He's a bad defender everywhere on the diamond -- he's eligible at first base to begin 2026 -- and he slugged .360 as an old-for-the-level player at Triple-A in 2025. To make matters worse, the Brewers have a loaded farm system, particularly at first base; Andrew Fischer, Brock Wilken, Blake Burke and Luke Adams to name a few. Black has stolen 20-plus bases three years in a row, despite missing significant time in 2025 with a broken hamate, which is the main reason he is still on the fantasy radar. He will turn 26 in July and could very easily be in a new organization by then. Read Past Outlooks
Sent down to Nashville
The Brewers optioned Black to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Black played well for the Brewers in the Cactus League, going 11-for-20 with 14 RBI, six runs scored and three steals in just six games. He cooled down while playing for Canada in the World Baseball Classic, however, tallying just one hit and five strikeouts in his 10 at-bats. Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers are expected to receive the vast majority of starts at first base for Milwaukee, so Black will likely spend most of the season as organizational depth at Nashville.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
The 24-year-old is one of Milwaukee's top prospects and received his first taste of the majors in 2024, though he didn't do much in limited action with a .204/.316/.245 slash line and 29.8 percent strikeout rate in 18 contests. Black was plenty productive at Triple-A Nashville, however, and finished with 15 home runs, 20 stolen bases and an .805 OPS in just 103 games. Defensive limitations restrict his path to playing time in the big leagues, especially with Rhys Hoskins and Christian Yelich poised to get a lot of work at first base and designated hitter, respectively. Milwaukee potentially has an infield opening at third base following the departure of Willy Adames (with Joey Ortiz expected to slide to shortstop), but it's unclear if Milwaukee is willing to give Black significant run at the hot corner. Assuming he'll primarily be used at first base and designated hitter, the Brewers would likely need to make a trade or deal with some injuries in order for Black to receive a regular shot at playing time in 2025. Hoskins could also fall into a lesser role as the season unfolds if he's unable to improve upon a career-low .722 OPS.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could get early call-up in '24
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Tuesday that Black could be considered for an early-season call-up in 2024, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Analysis
Black, the 33rd overall selection in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft, posted a shiny .284/.417/.513 batting line with 18 home runs and 55 stolen bases in 123 games this season between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville while making 97 starts at third base and 16 starts at first base. Those two positions represent significant areas of need for Milwaukee, pending any offseason moves, and Black sure looks like an intriguing internal option with considerable multi-category fantasy upside.
