Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
After toiling in the minors since 2019, Johnston made his major league debut when the Marlins called him up in late July. He played in 44 games over the final two months of the season, posting a 109 wRC+ while splitting time between first base and the corner outfield spots. Despite a high chase rate, Johnston's strikeout rate was slightly better than league average. Waived by Miami in early November, Johnston was quickly claimed by Colorado, where his above-average fly ball profile is a better fit than South Beach. With an opening at first base, he should have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the job, and any player receiving regular at-bats in Coors Field carries inherent fantasy upside. Playing time trending back up
Johnston will start in right field and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis
The Rockies will keep Johnston in the starting nine for the fourth straight game and for the fifth time in six contests after he went 6-for-15 at the plate over the previous week, boosting his OPS to .814 on the season. Johnston's opportunities appeared to be on the downturn around the middle of the June, but he's begun to eat into the playing time Tyler Freeman, a right-handed hitter who should play regularly against lefties but may be in line for more of a part-time role against righties. With Colorado projected to face four right-handed Marlins starters and two right-handed Giants starters at Coors Field during its seven-game week, the left-handed-hitting Johnston looks like a solid short-term fantasy option, even in shallower leagues.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Johnston has been toiling in the Marlins organization since 2019. He spent last season with Triple-A Jacksonville, posting a 99 wRC+. His main asset is an above average contact rate, but he doesn't hit the ball hard. Johnston will turn 28 years old in June, and at 5-11, 205 pounds, more power is possible but not likely. He's exhibited the power/speed combination envied by fantasy managers, but it's unclear how his quantity and quality of contact will translate to the highest level, especially as a first baseman. The Marlins lack a proven commodity at the position, so a hot spring could propel Johnston into the mix. At best Johnston is worth tracking in the spring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option for Arizona?
Johnston is one of several left-handed hitters the Diamondbacks could target ahead of the trade deadline, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Analysis
The Diamondbacks are expected to pursue a left-handed bat before the deadline to help balance their lineup, and Johnston certainly fits that bill. The 27-year-old is having a strong first season in Colorado, hitting .320 with an .814 OPS across 216 plate appearances this season.
