Could be needed to start
Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said that Perez wasn't available out of the bullpen for Monday's 5-4 loss to Seattle because the left-hander might be needed to start one of the final two games of the series in Seattle, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Atlanta has already confirmed Bryce Elder and Grant Holmes as its starters for Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, but Weiss's comments may indicate that one of the two is not necessarily locked into taking the hill that day. Though he had been expected to shift to the bullpen when Atlanta brought back Spencer Strider from the injured list over the weekend, Perez looks like he could still be a factor in the rotation. Whether he makes his next appearance as a starter or a reliever, Perez will be fresh after having not pitched since last Tuesday, when he tossed five scoreless innings against Detroit to bring his season ERA down to 2.22.

Perez split time between Pittsburgh and San Diego last season, totaling 135 innings over 26 outings. He was much better after joining the Padres at the trade deadline, posting a 3.46 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB across 52 frames over 10 starts. However, his 4.82 FIP was only slightly better than the 4.95 mark he recorded in 16 starts with Pittsburgh, and Perez's Statcast metrics are mostly icy blue. It's hard to get excited about an aging hurler whose average fastball velocity (90.8 mph) and strikeout rate (18.1 percent) both rank near the bottom 10th percentile leaguewide. Perez has two positive things going for him -- he's a lefty and is usually pretty good at inducing groundballs -- but those assets shouldn't lead fantasy mangers to draft him in 2025 outside the deepest of leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Pirates interested?
According to John Perrotto of PittsburghBaseballNow.com, the Pirates could have interest in signing Perez.
Analysis
The 34-year-old made just 11 appearances for the White Sox last season due to elbow and shoulder injuries -- with the latter ending his campaign in mid-September -- but he pitched well when available with a 3.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 44:22 K:BB across 56 innings. Pittsburgh's rotation is heavy on right-handed starters, and a lefty like Perez would bring some balance to the unit at the back end. He made 16 starts for the Pirates in 2024 but scuffled to a 5.20 ERA before being dealt to the Padres at the trade deadline.
