2026 Fantasy Outlook
It's hard to be a starting pitcher when your home stadium is Coors Field, but Freeland didn't collect his first win of the 2025 season until June 4. He lost eight of his first 11 starts of the year, and while he logged five quality starts over that span he also posted a 5.72 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 61.1 innings. Freeland's numbers improved following the All-Star break, and his performance in September was enough to bring his in-season ERA below 5.00 for the first time in three years, though he still led the majors with 17 losses. He figures to be a top candidate to be the Rockies' Opening Day starter, but his 2018 season in which he posted a career-best 2.85 ERA across 202.1 innings is a distant memory. The magic number of innings for Freeland this season is 170, as he would earn a $17 million vesting player option for 2027 were he to hit that number. Read Past Outlooks
Inefficient in Friday's loss
Freeland (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Rockies fell 2-1 to the Marlins, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two.
Analysis
The veteran southpaw limited the damage against him, but Freeland needed 81 pitches (53 strikes) to record 13 outs before getting lifted. Freeland's been a fairly reliable innings eater for Colorado, averaging 27 starts and about 145.1 innings over the last five seasons, but his 4.82 ERA and 1.43 WHIP during that time aren't just a product of calling Coors Field home. He lines up to make his next start on the road next week against the Blue Jays.

The left-hander struggled to a 5.03 ERA in 29 starts before suffering an oblique strain in mid-September, which ended his season a couple weeks early. Freeland delivered a 2.85 ERA across 202.1 innings in 2018, but that effort is a clear anomaly as he has a 4.96 ERA in the five seasons since. His strikeout rate last season dipped to a career-low 13.9 percent, which went along with a career worst in his average fastball velocity (88.8 mph). Freeland was never a flamethrower, but the velocity drop puts even more pressure on his less-than-reliable command. Even if his fastball gets back into the lower 90s, the 4.33 ERA he had in 2020 and 2021 is likely the best fantasy managers can hope for, especially with hitter-friendly Coors Field still in the mix to bloat his numbers. Combined with the low strikeout numbers, the upside here is limited, at best.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Trade option for Cubs?
Freeland could be a trade target for the Cubs ahead of the deadline, Jim Bowden of The Athletic speculates.
Analysis
There's no question the Cubs need to bolster their rotation to make a deep postseason run, so adding another starter, or maybe two, before the trade deadline will be a likely goal. With that in mind, Freeland is an arm they could target in the coming weeks. Freeland is an established veteran, and he should benefit from not having to pitch at Coors Field on a regular basis. He's made seven starts on the road this season, posting a 3.64 ERA across 42.0 innings in those outings.
