Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Geraldo Perdomo's MVP-caliber season has the Diamondbacks scrambling to find a position for Lawlar, who spent much of 2025 at Triple-A Reno. He played second base (24 games), third base (33) and shortstop (20) in the minors. For Arizona, Lawlar broke through in September (.308/.364/.487 slash line) after going hitless in his first 31 at-bats. What became evident are defensive struggles at the hot corner, which relegated him mostly to DH and PH work in the final weeks of the season. The 23-year-old spent time in the Dominican Winter League with a mission to get comfortable in center field. Lawlar either needs to get better at third base or be competent in center, because Perdomo and Ketel Marte are locked in at middle infield. Offseason rumors that the club is listening to offers for Marte indicate Lawlar may eventually have a home at second base. That Lawlar's bat showed promise in September is a positive sign, as he had gone a combined 4-for-62 (.065), including his MLB stint in 2023, prior to his September production. Read Past Outlooks
Lands on injured list
The Diamondbacks placed Lawlar on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain.
Analysis
Lawlar had to come out of Friday's game after legging out an infield single, and he was later diagnosed with a hamstring strain. He'll now spend at least the next 10 days on the shelf, leaving Jorge Barrosa as the favorite to take over as Arizona's primary center fielder. Tim Tawa was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

A lot of the prospect shine has come off Lawlar due to a mounting injury history and some uncertainty about how much he'll hit at the highest level. Lawlar's season began with him getting optioned from big-league camp March 10, as Arizona didn't entertain the idea of him beating out Geraldo Perdomo for the everyday shortstop job and only wanted Lawlar on the big-league roster if he were going to play regularly. He had surgery for a torn ligament in his thumb in late March and returned within the initial 8-to-10 week timeline in early June. He went 8-for-20 with a home run, a triple and two doubles in his first four games with Triple-A Reno before suffering a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. Lawlar's recovery may have been rushed, as he aggravated the hamstring during his rehab assignment in early July and didn't return until mid-September. He played in 119 games in 2023 and 100 games in 2022, so while Lawlar has some major injuries on his ledger, the injury-prone tag wasn't applicable prior to 2024. His dynasty value is on a tipping point this offseason, as there are merits for buying low and for cashing out. He's a priority follow early in spring training.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Position change incoming?
Lawlar could move to the outfield in the near future and has been playing in center field during winter ball, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Analysis
Lawlar is playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic with Tigres de Licey this offseason and has manned center field. This is the first foray into the outfield at the pro level for Lawlar, who has played second base, third base and shortstop in the past. Since his defense was an issue during the 2025 season, the Diamondbacks seem to be exploring the possibility of seeing what he can do in another position.
