2026 Fantasy Outlook
McCarthy is stuck in a spin cycle in recent years where he puts up gaudy triple-slash lines in Triple-A Reno, but returns to the majors and does the exact opposite. McCarthy hit .314/.401/.440 in Triple-A this past season but .204/.247/.345 at the big league level. He is now nearly 1500 plate appearances into a major league career and has a frontloaded .260/.324/.381 line to show for it with 83 steals in 98 attempts. McCarthy, even at 28 years old, remains one of the fastest players in baseball by sprint speed, but his lack of power allows pitchers to confidently challenge him to do something at the plate rather than earn walks and use that speed. McCarthy's ability to play all three outfield positions and pinch run keeps him around on the Arizona roster, but the path to fantasy viability in 2026 is extremely opaque. Read Past Outlooks

McCarthy went 0-for-2 with two RBI on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Analysis
McCarthy was productive despite going hitless, driving in a run on a groundout and a sacrifice fly. While he had a five-game hitting streak snapped, McCarthy now has 14 RBI across his first seven games in July. This stretch continued a breakout season, as he's tallied 51 RBI, 37 runs scored and 14 stolen bases across 78 games.

Stat Review
How does Jake McCarthy compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

2019
Players who hit the ball without much authority are subject to more variance than those generating elevated exit velocity. In 2023, McCarthy was sent to the minors twice, both after a horrid BABIP (.160 in April and .208 in August). Last year, he avoided a similar fate by maintaining monthly levels between .272 and .417. McCarthy also posted a career-best 15.8 percent strikeout rate, the third straight season with a decline. He stole 25 bases in 142 contests, but considering he swiped 49 in 198 games over the prior two seasons, 2024's total was disappointing. McCarthy's defense is palatable, but it's not going to keep him in the lineup. Despite the bounce-back season, he's the same player, sporting one of the lowest average exit velocities and hard-hit rates in the league, but he doesn't fan much and sports 98th percentile sprint speed. Cheap steals are his asset, but not as a primary source.
McCarthy entered the 2023 season with plenty of fantasy buzz after finishing the previous year with a flourish. Unfortunately, he found himself back in the minors before the end of April following a slow start. He returned after a month on the farm and hit .311 with 15 stolen bases during a 31-game stretch, but that surge in production wound up being short-lived. McCarthy hardly played in the final two months of the season and was removed from the Diamondbacks' Wild Card Series roster due to an oblique injury. The 26-year-old has been an elite base stealer with 49 swipes since 2022 as a semi-regular. His quality of contact (23.7 percent hard-hit rate in 2023) has been woeful, though, and he hasn't graded out well defensively, so getting enough consistent playing time to take advantage of those wheels is a legitimate question. Arizona re-signed Lourdes Gurriel, which could push McCarthy to a reserve role.
McCarthy began the 2023 season on the big-league roster as a reserve and was up and down a couple times before ultimately settling into a regular role in the second half. A supplemental first-round pick by Arizona in 2018, McCarthy showed a great deal of improvement with his bat-to-ball skills during his time at Triple-A last season and those improvements carried over, fueling his .300/.360/..426 line after the break. Best of all for fantasy players, McCarthy racked up 23 steals in total across 99 games (354 plate appearances) while only getting caught stealing three times. His sprint speed ranked in the 98th percentile, though the Statcast numbers throw cold water on his plate production. Regardless the Diamondbacks will want to see what they have in McCarthy, who should continue to have the green light given his success rate. The 25-year-old showed that he can hold his own against lefty pitching (.764 OPS).
The younger brother of Joe McCarthy, an OF/1B prospect in the upper levels of the Rays' system, Jake entered the year with a chance to go in the middle of the first round, but a broken wrist cost him most of his junior year at Virginia. He didn't fall far in the draft, going in the competitive balance round (39th overall) and netting a $1.65 million bonus. McCarthy spent most of his debut season in the Northwest League, where his 0.55 BB/K ranked eighth and his 132 wRC+ ranked 12th. He put his plus speed to work, stealing 20 bases on 28 attempts. McCarthy will stick in center field and may have a good enough approach to eventually hit atop a lineup. The recent history of high-pedigree Virginia hitters in pro ball isn't great, but McCarthy has better raw tools than most of those examples. He is not expected to hit for a ton of power (53.0 GB%), but at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, he could unlock 15-to-20 homer pop with more professional instruction.

OFColorado Rockies
July 6, 2026
The Astros are interested in acquiring McCarthy via trade before the deadline on Aug. 3, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.
Analysis
The Astros need to acquire an outfielder at all costs, and they're keeping close tabs on two Colorado players in McCarthy and Mickey Moniak. McCarthy is enjoying a strong season in 2026, hitting .306 with a career-best .865 OPS across 277 plate appearances in 76 games. He's also launched nine homers, which is already a career-high mark for the six-year veteran.
