Irvin made 33 starts and reached 180 innings for the second straight season, but his overall performance took a step back. His walk rate rose, his strikeouts declined and he led MLB by allowing 38 home runs. Both his four-seam fastball and sinker lost roughly 1.5 mph in velocity, though his heavy workload suggests durability was not a concern. While consistently taking the ball has value, Irvin may be at risk of losing his rotation spot if the velocity does not return, particularly with multiple Nationals starters expected back from injury. Analysis

The right-hander tossed 93 pitches as well, so he appears to be just about fully built up already on the young campaign. That said, Irvin was tagged for a pair of home runs Sunday, and he's unlikely to make for a recommended fantasy streamer in his next scheduled outing against the Dodgers despite his strong first appearance.

Irvin went on a brilliant run last season in which he posted a 2.18 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 71:17 K:BB over 78.1 innings spanning 13 starts from April 29 to June 4. All good things must come to an end, and sure enough, he pitched to a 6.50 ERA from there. Still, Irvin took the ball 33 times, totaled 187.2 innings and won 10 games for a 71-win Nationals team. While he is not a very hard thrower, good extension helps his stuff play up a bit, and he can drop in a pretty good curveball. The strikeouts are modest and his rough stretch to end the season may drive people off him, but the innings and secure spot in the rotation provide reason alone to consider the right-hander in many formats. On top of that, Irvin has hinted at some performance upside.
