2026 Fantasy Outlook
Merrill's 2025 was not as much of a sophomore slump as it was a visit to the School of Hard Knocks. Merrill had a rough 2025 with an early hamstring strain that cost him a month, a concussion in mid June that returned him to the injured list for another 10 days, and a left ankle sprain in mid-August that resulted in a third trip to the injured list. Merrill, despite the setbacks, still finished the season with a solid 116 wRC+ and a .264/.317/.457 triple-slash line, but it came in just 115 games. He was pacing to meet or exceed his run production statistics, but the ankle sprain and hamstring injuries essentially shut down his running game, as he attempted just three steals all season after stealing 16 of 19 in 2024. Merrill's increase in strikeout rate also could be written off as being due to the concussion and injury recoveries. His acquisition cost in most leagues should be lower this year because of the injuries, but Merrill's upside remains strong. He does not even turn 23 until a few weeks into the season. Stretch goal: A 25-25 season. Read Past Outlooks
Racks up three hits in victory
Merrill went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a stolen base Tuesday in a 4-1 win over Seattle.
Analysis
Merrill notched one of the Padres' two extra-base hits in the game and recorded the team's only theft. The star outfielder seems to be turning things around after a slow start to the season, as he's batting .467 (7-for-15) with a home run, two doubles, four RBI, six runs and two steals over his past four games. Prior to the surge, Merrill had hit just .184 across his first 13 contests of the campaign.

Remember when Merrill accompanied the Padres overseas for the Korea Series but wasn't guaranteed to make the traditional Opening Day roster? He obviously stayed with the club, playing in 156 games and finishing second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. A shortstop by trade, Merrill held his own in center field, displaying a plus arm and range. At the plate, he parlayed 68th percentile hard-hit and 78th percentile barrel rates into a 130 wRC+. The only hole in the Merrill's freshman season was a 4.9 percent walk rate, but fanning just 17 percent of the time masks a lack of patience. The Padres were mid-pack in steals, with Merrill chipping in with a useful 16 bags. It wasn't much, but Merrill undershot his xBA and xSLG, so he could benefit from positive regression. He lost shortstop eligibility, but in today's landscape Merrill's fantasy value is unaffected.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Keeps building ROTY case
Merrill was named the National League Rookie of the Month for August on Tuesday.
Analysis
Merrill, who also won the award for his performance in June, posted a .303/.343/.626 slash line with five doubles, three triples, five steals, seven homers, 23 RBI and 18 runs in 27 games during August. The 21-year-old has come through in the clutch for the Friars, as he has seven homers and a 1.107 OPS in 80 plate appearances in late-and-close situations, which are in the seventh inning or later with the batting team tied, ahead by one, or the tying run at least on deck. Merrill has built a strong case for NL Rookie of the Year, but Paul Skenes and Jackson Chourio are also firmly in the mix.
