Ivan Herrera

Ivan Herrera

25-Year-Old DHDH
St. Louis Cardinals
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Injuries were the only thing to slow Herrera last season, as knee and hamstring issues conspired to limit him to just 107 contests. When healthy, though, he was the Cardinals' best hitter, sporting a wRC+ of 137 which matched Vladimir Guerrero. The 25-year-old's hard-hit rate, average exit velocity and barrel rate were all well above average, and he paired that plus quality of contact with a 9.5 percent walk rate and just an 18.6 percent strikeout rate. Herrera was a career .288/.414/.460 hitter at the Triple-A level, so the offensive breakout didn't come as a big surprise. While there aren't any real questions about his proficiency at the plate, his ability to stay behind it is in doubt. Herrera didn't catch in the second half and will enter 2026 as utility-only eligible in most formats. However, the Cardinals plan to give him another go at catcher in 2026 following a cleanup procedure on his right elbow, so he should regain eligibility at the position early on as long as he shows enough improvement defensively. Catching McGreevy and Pallante
DHSt. Louis Cardinals
April 7, 2026
Herrera has served as the personal catcher for Michael McGreevy and Andre Pallante and is expected to continue doing so at least through the end of April, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis
The goal in having Herrera attached to two specific starters allows the Cardinals to simplify his game-planning duties and also ease his catching burden following offseason elbow surgery and a spring training knee issue. Additionally, with Herrera catching the team's two best groundball pitchers, it frees up the designated-hitter spot for Nolan Gorman and third base for a better defender in Ramon Urias. The Cardinals have been pleased with Herrera's work at catcher so far, as well as the health of his knee. If those things continue trending in a positive direction, Herrera will eventually take on additional catching responsibilities. If McGreevy and Pallante remain on the same schedule, Herrera should reach 10 games at catcher on April 24, which is the in-season eligibility threshold on most fantasy platforms.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Herrera's reputation as an offensive-minded catcher held true in 2024. Among Cardinals hitters to accrue at least 250 plate appearances, Herrera led the club with his .369 xwOBA. However, while he graded out fine as a framer and blocker of balls in the dirt, Herrera was so inept at throwing out opposing base stealers (he caught just four of them in 59 tries) that he was leap-frogged on the depth chart by the defensively-superior Pedro Pages during the stretches Willson Contreras was hurt. Contreras will move off catcher full-time in 2025, leaving Herrera and Pages to split starts behind the dish. Herrera's offensive upside makes him a fine fantasy sleeper, but he'll need to show some level of improvement with his throwing if he wants to outpace Pages in playing time.
Herrera took a big step forward last season at Triple-A Memphis, sporting a .291/.451/.500 batting line with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was also very productive during his brief time in the majors, slashing .297/.409/.351 with a 61.5 percent hard-hit rate in 13 contests. Herrera's strike-zone discipline has long been a strength, and he took it to another level in 2023 at Memphis with a 20 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate. His power hasn't fully unlocked to this point, due in large part to a bloated groundball rate, but given that he's still just 23 that part of his game might still grow. With Andrew Knizner non-tendered, Herrera is in line to serve as Willson Contreras' understudy in 2024. It's a role which garnered 63 starts and 241 plate appearances for Knizner last season, and a similar workload for Herrera seems likely. That's not enough playing time for Herrera to be very fantasy relevant, but he would have some upside if pushed into more responsibilities.
Herrera's developmental schedule was stalled over the winter once St. Louis inked Willson Contreras to a long-term deal in late November. Herrera is likely scheduled to get back to Triple-A unless he beats out Andrew Knizner in the spring. Herrera has much more upside than Knizner, but the addition of Contreras allows the Cardinals to give Herrera some more seasoning in Memphis because he should be getting more than 1-2 games a week than he would get in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy. Simply put, Herrera's immediate future is a bit less exciting as long as he remains in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Ready to return in spring training?
DHSt. Louis Cardinals
November 4, 2025
Herrera, who is rehabbing from a right elbow injury, is expected to be recovered for spring training, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Analysis
Herrera, who underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow in October, is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. However, even though he's expected to see action behind the plate in 2026, it seems he's also likely to see time at other positions aside from catcher. He was the Cardinals' everyday designated hitter during the second half of the 2025 regular season, and it seems the organization wants to see him play different roles to keep his bat in the lineup regularly.
