2025 Fantasy Outlook
Birdsong began last season at Double-A Richmond but wound up making 16 starts for the Giants. He flashed plenty of swing-and-miss ability with a 27.9 percent strikeout rate and a pair of double-digit strikeout outings, but the young right-hander also had an ugly 13.7 percent walk rate and completed six innings in just one of his 16 starts. Birdsong has three legitimate secondary pitches in his curveball, changeup and slider, with each garnering a whiff rate of at least 32.7 percent and all three offerings earning excellent Stuff+ grades. However, his Location+ of 92 was among the worst in baseball for a regular starter, which no doubt was the main reason why opponents had an obscene 50 percent hard-hit rate. There's legitimate upside with Birdsong and he could open 2025 in the Giants' rotation, but he'll have to improve his command and control to be a reliable option in fantasy. Read Past Outlooks

Kyle Behren’s Opening Day FAAB includes a healthy Byron Buxton, whose hot start to spring training for the Twins hasn’t cooled down.

Much has been decided in the National League over the last few days, including the Giants' fifth starter job, which was won by Landen Roupp.

Jan Levine has a slightly smaller rundown of NL options than last week to get you prepared for the North American start to the regular season.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Known for his premium stuff and wild control heading into 2023, Birdsong kept the starting pitching dream alive by throwing more strikes than expected as a 21-year-old at Single-A and High-A. From April 26 through July 30, Birdsong had a 2.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 100 strikeouts and 25 walks in 69 innings. That dominant run was book-ended by some struggles, particularly a 12.5 percent walk rate in 23 innings after a late-season promotion to Double-A. Birdsong's stuff and potential home park are still an alluring combination in dynasty leagues. The 6-foot-4 righty boasts a plus mid-90s fastball, a potentially plus low-80s curveball and a solid slider. If he shows improved control in a return to Double-A, Birdsong will have an up arrow next to his name as a potential high-strikeout mid-rotation starter who could reach the majors in late 2024 or early 2025. An eventual move to relief remains a possibility.
