2025 Projections
Lands with Royals for $3.8 million
Pena agreed to a $3.8 million deal with the Royals, Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A bat-first lefty-hitting outfielder from the Dominican Republic, Pena is arguably the third-best fantasy prospect from this year's July 2 international signing class. He is extremely athletic, and at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, he already shows massive power potential. Despite his size, Pena does not have significant strikeout issues, and projects to be an above-average hitter. He might get too big for center field by the time he reaches the majors, but his development will be all about his bat. If he hits as expected, he will be a key piece on the next contending Royals team, possibly slotting behind Bobby Witt Jr. in the big-league lineup in 2023 or 2024.

Jasson Dominguez rightfully gets most of the hype from the 2019 July 2 international signing class, but Pena, who signed for just under $4 million, has also been a top-100 dynasty prospect for over a year despite having not played an official pro game. The lefty hitting right fielder spent the summer training in the Dominican Republic before coming stateside for fall instructs. Pena, who is already fluent in English, essentially didn't play competitively between November 2019 and October 2020, and he was the youngest Royals player in camp, so he naturally struggled with strikeouts against significantly more experienced pitchers. For him to become a top-10 prospect he will need to show the type of offensive upside we've seen from past J-2 prodigies like Eloy Jimenez and Marco Luciano. He already measures in at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds and turns 18 in February, so keeping his weight in check will be important.
