Rom developed a left shoulder injury during spring training of last year and eventually underwent arthroscopic surgery in early May, ending his season before it began. It was a missed year of development for a guy who could have used it, as Rom didn't offer much promise during his eight starts with the Cardinals in 2023, putting up an ERA over 8.00 and a WHIP over 2.00. The left-hander has consistently fanned more than a batter per inning in the minors, but control has been an issue in the upper levels and he gets by more with deception than stuff. Rom could eventually be in the mix for starts in what looks like a transition year for St. Louis, but more time at Triple-A Memphis is needed for the 25-year-old after a lost season. He slid farther down the pecking order after be outrighted off the 40-man roster over the winter.
