Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Hernaiz entered the year needing a strong spring after managing only a .503 OPS in 135 major league plate appearances the season before, but a .608 OPS in camp returned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. He continued to hit there, posting his third consecutive season with a batting average of .300 or better and a .376 on-base mark, earning a recall in late July and a stay in the majors the rest of the season. His .598 OPS represented progress from his rookie campaign, though it still trailed his .815 OPS over 191 Triple-A games. Speed has been a minor league asset, as he stole 24 bases in 27 attempts across three Triple-A seasons, but that hasn't translated yet, with a 3-for-7 showing last season with the Athletics. Hernaiz kept his strikeout rate to 12.2 percent and undershot his expected batting average by 26 points, offering some optimism. With minimal power, his clearest role is as a bench option. Sent down to Triple-A
The Athletics optioned Hernaiz to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.
Analysis
The Athletics had to make room on the 26-man roster after Max Muncy (hand) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, and Hernaiz was selected to move down to Triple-A. He has a .606 OPS with three steals, one home run and seven RBI over 134 plate appearances this season but has gone 3-for-26 (.115) across his last nine games. Hernaiz will work on his approach at the plate with Las Vegas and could return to the big club should the Athletics need depth in the infield.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Hernaiz made the Athletics' Opening Day roster last season and was carving out a regular role when he went down with a severely sprained ankle in early May which sidelined him for nearly three months. The 23-year-old never gained any momentum at the plate either before or after the injury, ultimately finishing with a lowly .503 OPS which ranked 442nd out of 455 players to reach 100 plate appearances. Hernaiz has slashed .312/.376/.448 in 95 games at the Triple-A level, although his home venue in Las Vegas during that time was extremely hitter-friendly. While Hernaiz has solid plate discipline, he lacks power and he hasn't done much running since A-ball. Hernaiz could compete for the Athletics' third base job but appears best suited to be a utility infielder.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Boxed out for starting job?
The Athletics' acquisition of Jeff McNeil last week could mean Hernaiz won't begin 2026 as the club's primary second baseman.
Analysis
Hernaiz certainly wasn't guaranteed the job prior to the trade, but the acquisition of a veteran player like McNeil, who underwent shoulder surgery in October but is expected to be ready for spring training, certainly appears to close the door on the competition. Hernaiz played in 51 big-league games last season and posted a .231/.292/.306 slash line with two home runs and three steals.
