Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Hummel was dealt to Seattle from Arizona in the deal for Kyle Lewis last winter, and he was able to break camp with the Mariners and even saw some time in the lineup to begin 2023. He went just 2-for-23 in his chances, however, and he didn't see another at-bat with the M's after April 18. The left-handed hitter was effective in Tacoma with an .835 OPS and 27 steals over 455 plate appearances, and he's slashed .288/.420/.492 in his 225 games at the Triple-A level. Hummel is a patient hitter who doesn't possess a ton of swing-and-miss, but he also doesn't have the power potential that you typically see in a viable corner-outfield option. He does have the ability to catch, and that versatility and approach gives him a chance to make the Seattle roster out of the Cactus League. It just won't likely make him worthy of a fantasy roster anytime soon, if ever.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Getting time at catcher
Hummel made his first two big-league starts at catcher over the weekend in Colorado.
Analysis
Hummel spent much of his college and early minor-league career as a catcher but has rarely appeared behind the plate over the last three seasons. When backup catcher Jose Herrera was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday, it seemed likely that Daulton Varsho would take over his role but it appears another versatile outfielder, Hummel, has taken on the backup catching duties. Hummel has a subpar .174/.278/.297 line in 53 games for Arizona and a healthy .310/.423/.527 line in 33 contests in Triple-A. The 27-year-old will likely split his time between catcher and the corner outfield spots for the Diamondbacks.
