Caleb Durbin

25-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Boston Red Sox
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Durbin was acquired by the Brewers from the Yankees last winter and spent the first couple weeks of 2025 in the minors, but he was called up in mid-April and finished third in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. He operated as Milwaukee's primary third baseman and totaled 11 home runs, 18 steals, 53 RBI and 60 runs along with a .256/.334/.387 slash line in 136 games. He showed solid plate discipline with a 6.3 percent walk rate and 9.9 percent strikeout rate, but he ranked in the 12th percentile or worse in barrel rate (4.0 percent), hard-hit rate (26.9 percent) and average exit velocity (85.2 mph). The poor quality of contact resulted in a .255 xBA and .355 xSLG, so he'll likely need to improve in that area to maintain similar power production. Durbin certainly doesn't profile as a prototypical third baseman and is better suited for the keystone, and it's possible he gets shifted there after being traded to Boston during the offseason. Dual-position eligibility would come in handy, but regardless of which position he's at, Durbin should have a chance to reach 20 stolen bases in 2026 but is likely to have a limited fantasy ceiling without improving his quality of contact. Durbin (elbow) was spotted taking part in infield drills during Monday's full-squad workout, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Durbin underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right elbow in late October, but he doesn't look like he'll be operating with any restrictions in his first spring training with the Red Sox, who acquired him last week in a six-player deal with the Brewers. During his rookie campaign with Milwaukee, Durbin served as the team's primary third baseman and was a threat on the basepaths (18 steals in 24 attempts) and made contact at an elite clip (9.9 percent strikeout rate), but his 26.9 percent hard-hit rate ranked in the fourth percentile of all batted and limited his slugging production. With that in mind, Durbin's bat may profile better at second base rather than third base, but the Red Sox will likely give him a look at both positions throughout the spring.

Stat Review
How does Caleb Durbin compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
If Arizona Fall League fantasy leagues existed, Durbin would be a first-round pick. In 2024, he set the AFL single-season record with 29 steals, and he also has the career AFL record with 50 steals (on 53 attempts) in his 47 games on the fall circuit. Durbin should get his chance to show how much his game translates at the highest level this year after getting traded to Milwaukee as part of the return from the Yankees for Devin Williams. Durbin slashed .287/.396/.471 with 10 home runs, 29 steals, a 12.5 percent walk rate and a 9.9 percent strikeout rate in 82 games at Triple-A. Durbin is listed at 5-foot-6, 185 pounds and logged a very poor 20.9 percent hard-hit rate and a 27.2 percent soft-hit rate in the minors in 2024, but so far, he has been able to ambush enough pitches to the pull side to hit for respectable game power. That trend may not carry over, at least initially, in the majors, but Durbin should get a fair opportunity with the Brewers due to his defensive versatility, ability to get on base and ability to steal bases in bunches. He is eligible at second base but could add third base eligibility early in the year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Position TBD
3BBoston Red Sox
February 9, 2026
Durbin will play either at second or third base, manager Alex Cora told reporters Monday, including Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.
Analysis
Durbin played third base in 2025 for Milwaukee but second base was his primary position in the minors, so a Durbin/Trevor Story double-play duo could make sense while Marcelo Mayer gets a look at third base. Kristian Campbell could be a wild card in the equation, as a strong spring from him could push Durbin to third base.
