Braxton Ashcraft

Braxton Ashcraft

26-Year-Old PitcherSP
Pittsburgh Pirates
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Ashcraft made his big-league debut in late May and spent most of his time as a multi-inning reliever. He effectively limited runs, though his 97 mph fastball didn't immediately translate into a particularly impressive strikeout rate. However, Ashcraft's work across his final nine outings of the campaign - a stretch when he worked at least 4.0 innings five times - gives both the Pirates and fantasy managers reason to believe in his future as an impact starter. In that span, Ashcraft posted a 43:12 K:BB across 36.1 innings while also maintaining a 2.23 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. His pitch characteristics back up his small sample of success, as Ashcraft boasts three above-average pitches (sinker, slider, curveball) that he threw at least 20 percent of the time in his big-league debut. He can use his sinker to induce groundballs (50.3 percent groundball rate) early in the count, while his slider is his primary pitch to generate whiffs. The two major concerns for Ashcraft are his control, he ran walk rates north of 8.0 percent in both Triple-A and the majors last season, and his ability to work through opposing lineups multiple times after being handled very carefully by the Pirates in 2025. Pittsburgh dealt away some of its pitching depth early in the offseason, likely setting up Ashcraft with his most significant opportunity in the big leagues to begin 2026 and he could step forward to join Paul Skenes and Bubba Chandler as a fixture in the Pirates' future. Ashcraft (9-3) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a 7-1 victory over the Nationals. He struck out seven.
Analysis
James Wood led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot on Ashcraft's first pitch, but the right-hander shut the door from there and came one out short of his 11th quality start of the season. It was an impressive bounce-back performance after he'd been tagged for three homers and five runs in his previous outing; but despite that damage to his ratios, Ashcraft has won four straight starts. He'll take a 3.24 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 122:25 K:BB through 108.1 innings into his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Brewers.

For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Ashcraft is overshadowed within the Pirates' farm system by the likes of Bubba Chandler and even Thomas Harrington, but he's had a quick rise through the minors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022. He's delivered strikeout rates of 29.6 and 25.8 percent in the last two seasons and maintained a particularly tidy 4.0 percent walk rate across 73 innings in 2024. Zooming out a bit, Ashcraft has an untraditional pitch mix for a starter, with his slider and curveball leading his arsenal. In contrast, his fastball is less well-regarded, which could cause issues in the majors when he faces hitters that have fewer issues handling velocity. Another major concern is Ashcraft's health. He lost nearly the entire second half of 2024 with forearm injuries, making only two starts after the calendar flipped to July. Monitoring his health will be key come February when he reports to spring training, though there isn't much standing in the way of his big-league debut given that he's already on the 40-man roster. Coming from an organization well regarded for its pitching development in recent seasons, Ashcraft has the chance to be a key late draft pick or FAAB addition.
