2026 Fantasy Outlook
Where Pfaadt's results in 2024 (4.71 ERA) didn't reflect expectations (3.78), he earned every penny of his 5.25 ERA last season. The 27-year-old experienced dramatic highs and lows, allowing at least six earned runs in six outings and throwing a tidy nine-inning shutout in September. Pfaadt tinkered with his pitch mix, increasing the frequency of his secondary offerings at the expense of his four-seamer, probably due the Run Value of his four-seamer dropping from plus-7 to minus-2. The right-hander excelled at preventing walks (4.8 BB%), but his K% dropped five points to 19.2 percent in 2025. That suggests poor location in the zone and hitters made him pay (63.2 strand rate). An effective put-away pitch was lacking last season. The Diamondbacks still see the good in Pfaadt but need him to be better in 2026, when Corbin Burnes (elbow) will be unavailable until the second half, and free agent Zac Gallen could be pitching elsewhere. Optioned to Reno
The Diamondbacks optioned Pfaadt to Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Pfaadt could be stretched out into a starter in the near future, and his demotion to Triple-A suggests that the D-backs are already putting that plan into motion. While the 27-year-old works on building up his workload, Kade Strowd and Philip Abner will come up from Reno to fill the open spots in Arizona's bullpen.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Don't be discouraged by Pfaadt's bloated 4.71 ERA; all the estimators peg it at least a run better. He was victimized by a low 64.5 percent left on base mark. The righty improved his strikeout and walk rates last season while fixing the gopheritis plaguing him in his rookie year. Pfaadt adjusted his pitch mix, throwing more sinkers at the expense of four-seam fastballs. In 2023, his change-up generated a negative Fangraphs Pitch Value, but last year it rated as Pfaadt's second best offering, though he used it only 11.2 percent of the time. His sweeper sported the highest swinging strike rate of his repertoire. Pfaadt has demonstrated willingness to adjust, and it appears he has the arsenal to fine tune even more. Last season's high ERA could drop his acquisition cost. Buy the floor, and dream on further tweaks elevating Pfaadt to the next level.
