2026 Fantasy Outlook
After ending the 2024 season on the injured list with a shoulder strain, Abbott was brought along slowly in spring training and missed the start of the 2025 campaign. He returned with a fury, going 5-0 with a 1.51 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across his first nine starts (47.2 innings). The excellent first half earned Abbott his first career All-Star selection. He hit a rough patch in the second half, however, posting a 5.14 ERA over a six-start stretch from August into September. While he played a significant part in getting the Reds to the playoffs, the lefty didn't pitch in the postseason, though he likely would have started Game 3 against the Dodgers in the wild-card round. His 2.87 ERA overall was a top-10 mark among qualified starters, and Abbott made major strides with his walk and home-run rates. His strikeout rate was still lagging behind at 21.8%, but on the heels of his breakout season, Abbott does not look out of place as the No. 2 starter on the depth chart for Cincinnati. Struggles with command Tuesday
Abbott didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing four hits and four walks with four strikeouts across 5.2 shutout innings.
Analysis
Abbott set the Cubs down in order the first three innings, allowing just one single that was erased when Matt Shaw tried stretching it into two bases. Abbott battled his control over his final 2.2 frames, issuing a season-high four walks. He still managed to escape with no damage, throwing his first scoreless outing since Opening Day against Boston. Following a career year in 2025, Abbott owns a 5.13 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and underwhelming 28:19 K:BB over 40.1 innings this season. He's gone six innings just twice in eight starts and is lined up to next face the Astros at home Sunday.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Abbott, a second-round pick in 2021, made 25 starts for the Reds last season before a left shoulder strain put him on the shelf. There was talk of a return toward the end of September, but the team went the cautious route, prioritizing a normal offseason. Abbott enjoyed similar results to his rookie year before the injury, but his strikeout rate fell precipitously to a shade under 20 percent. He will likely need to ramp that back up if he is to maintain similar ratios, especially since he's a fairly heavy flyball pitcher in Cincinnati. The southpaw is tentatively lined up to open 2025 with a rotation spot, but he will need to prove his health and earn it in Cactus League play.
