Cincinnati Reds
2026 Fantasy Outlook
After ending the 2024 season on the injured list with a shoulder strain, Abbott was brought along slowly in spring training and missed the start of the 2025 campaign. He returned with a fury, going 5-0 with a 1.51 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across his first nine starts (47.2 innings). The excellent first half earned Abbott his first career All-Star selection. He hit a rough patch in the second half, however, posting a 5.14 ERA over a six-start stretch from August into September. While he played a significant part in getting the Reds to the playoffs, the lefty didn't pitch in the postseason, though he likely would have started Game 3 against the Dodgers in the wild-card round. His 2.87 ERA overall was a top-10 mark among qualified starters, and Abbott made major strides with his walk and home-run rates. His strikeout rate was still lagging behind at 21.8%, but on the heels of his breakout season, Abbott does not look out of place as the No. 2 starter on the depth chart for Cincinnati. Escapes with no-decision Saturday
PCincinnati Reds
April 18, 2026
Abbott didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Twins, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis
The southpaw didn't have his best stuff, tossing just 52 of 97 pitches for strikes and managing only eight swinging strikes. Abbott left the mound headed for his third loss of the season, but the Reds were able to rally late to take him off the hook. He'll carry a 5.84 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing, which is set to come at home next weekend against the Tigers.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Abbott, a second-round pick in 2021, made 25 starts for the Reds last season before a left shoulder strain put him on the shelf. There was talk of a return toward the end of September, but the team went the cautious route, prioritizing a normal offseason. Abbott enjoyed similar results to his rookie year before the injury, but his strikeout rate fell precipitously to a shade under 20 percent. He will likely need to ramp that back up if he is to maintain similar ratios, especially since he's a fairly heavy flyball pitcher in Cincinnati. The southpaw is tentatively lined up to open 2025 with a rotation spot, but he will need to prove his health and earn it in Cactus League play.
Abbott emerged from relative obscurity to position himself as a potential rotation piece for the Reds entering 2024. A second-round pick in 2021, he struck out 36 batters in 15.2 innings at Double-A Chattanooga to open last season before quickly moving up to Triple-A Louisville. The left-hander was promoted to the majors after just seven starts at Triple-A, and Abbott would go on to finish 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 120:44 K:BB over 109.1 big-league innings as a rookie. While he does not have great velocity, averaging just under 93 mph on his fastball, he throws four different pitches, including a sweeper that he features heavily against lefty hitters. Same-side hitters combined for just a .185/.224/.272 line against Abbott last season. His low groundball rate could lead to trouble in Great American Ball Park and it would be nice if he cut down on the walks, but Abbott is still just 24 and we expect there is another level to come with his strikeout rate.
