Alex Freeland

Alex Freeland

24-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Los Angeles Dodgers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Three years after the Dodgers selected him in the third round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, Freeland got his first taste of big-league action last season. He saw a fair amount of playing time in August but struggled against big-league pitching, posting a .602 OPS with two home runs, six RBI, one stolen base and a 36.1 percent strikeout rate over 97 plate appearances. He was much better at Triple-A, slashing .263/.384/.451 with 16 homers, 82 RBI and 18 steals in 106 games, and that sort of well-rounded skill set is what Los Angeles hopes Freeland can bring to the big-league squad down the line. When he might get a full-time opportunity remains to be seen; though Freeland can play multiple infield positions, the Dodgers are pretty set across the diamond aside, potentially, from second base. If Freeland opens the campaign on the big-league roster it will likely be in a reserve role, so it may take an injury or two for him to get enough playing time to be worth a look in redraft fantasy leagues. Three hits, steal in loss
3BLos Angeles Dodgers
July 7, 2026
Freeland went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Rockies.
Analysis
Freeland has started at second base in five of the Dodgers' seven games in July, including three times against right-handers. There was room for both Freeland and Tommy Edman in the lineup Tuesday since Teoscar Hernandez got a day off, but the two are largely expected to share duties at the keystone. Edman's versatility likely means Freeland won't get completely shut out of the lineup, but it remains to be seen how the work gets divvied up. Freeland is batting .237 with a .637 OPS, three home runs, two steals, 19 RBI, 24 runs scored and seven doubles over 218 plate appearances.

Stat Review
How does Alex Freeland compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Freeland doesn't have a plus tool, but he is average to above-average at everything that matters, both in real life and in fantasy. A fine shortstop who could also handle third base or second base, Freeland has above-average speed and stole 31 bases on 33 attempts in 136 games across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A in 2024. He hit .260 with a 21.6 percent strikeout rate, a 14.8 percent walk rate and 18 home runs during his breakout age-22 season, although his isolated power ticked down notably after each promotion. His 31.5 percent hard-hit rate was a very strong mark for a middle infielder his age, and Freeland banged 32 doubles on the campaign. The fact that he will provide quality defense at positions of need while working the count and hitting for a bit of power should allow him to be an everyday player at some point, although it will be tough for him to break through with the Dodgers early in 2025. Whenever he does settle in as a regular, Freeland could produce similarly to Dansby Swanson in fantasy.
