Nabs third hold
Bummer retired the only batter he faced Monday to record his third hold of the season in a win over the Nationals.
Analysis
The southpaw got the final out of the seventh inning after Bryce Elder was lifted following 98 pitches, getting James Wood to ground out with Atlanta ahead 7-4. Bummer already has more holds than he did in either 2025 or 2024, and while his 4.76 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 5.2 innings look shaky, he's been tagged with runs in only one of his nine appearances. He's become the newest incarnation of a LOOGY, working less than an inning in six of those outings while frequently being called in for the final out or two of an inning against left-handed hitters.

Bummer tossed his sweeper a career-high 42 percent of the time in 2024. It was a logical decision to make it his primary offering, as it has been his most effective pitch ever since he implemented it back in 2019. The southpaw still threw plenty of sinkers and the occasional cutter to produce one of the highest groundball rates (61.3 percent, 98th percentile) in the league, but it appears a near 30 percent K-rate is likely to stick moving forward. This should elevate Bummer on Atlanta's bullpen hierarchy, especially after the team signed him to a 2-year, $13 million deal in November. The 31-year-old's career 1.33 WHIP is a concern, but he should be back in the mix for holds after recording just two last year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Potential trade piece?
Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com believes Atlanta will make Bummer available for trade ahead of the July 31 deadline.
Analysis
Atlanta has stumbled into the All-Star break with a 42-53 record, and Bummer is a logical candidate to be traded as a middle reliever. The left-hander has just one hold and no saves but has pitched decently in 2025 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB across 39.1 innings. His $9.5 million salary for 2026 is a bit high, however, so that will likely be a drag on any potential trade return.
