2025 Fantasy Outlook
Romano was one of the best closers in baseball from 2021 to 2023 with a 2.37 ERA and 95 saves, but after an injury-riddled campaign due to elbow issues, he was non-tendered by Toronto. The 31-year-old allowed 10 earned runs across 15 appearances in 2024 before underdoing arthroscopic surgery in July. Romano was ramping up his throwing program at the end of the regular season and could be ready for the start of spring training. After signing a one-year, $8.5 million pact with Philadelphia, Romano will need prove he can still pitch at an elite level. If so, he's a likely candidate to receive save chances for the Phillies in 2025. Read Past Outlooks

Set for low-leverage work
Struggling with his velocity and results, Romano is expected to be used in low-leverage situations in the immediate future, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Romano has been touched up for five runs with a 2:3 K:BB over his last two appearances covering a total of one inning. He averaged just 93.5 mph with his four-seamer in Sunday's outing against the Dodgers, which is down nearly three full mph from last season. Phillies manager Rob Thomson indicated that Romano has been checked out by the team's trainers and "there's no red flags" physically, but the skipper admitted that "it concerns me a little bit that the velocity's down." Jose Alvarado picked up his second save for the Phillies in Sunday's victory over the Dodgers and is the team's best bet for saves right now.

Romano racked up 36 saves for the second consecutive year. It wasn't always pretty, as his 1.22 WHIP was his worst since his rookie season, but the right-hander remained effective in closing out games for Toronto. In fact, he set a Blue Jays franchise record with 26 successful conversions in a row. Romano maintained a 96.7 mph average fastball velocity that was in the 90th percentile despite dealing with lower back inflammation near mid-season, an injury that forced him from the All-Star Game after just five pitches, then subsequently resurfaced a few weeks later. Romano was able to return after a near-minimum IL stint, but he wasn't as sharp down the stretch, walking nine batters over his final 17 innings. He finished the season with a below-average 9.7% walk rate, but actually improved his strikeout percentage (29%), swinging strike rate (17%) and whiff percentage (35.9%). There's still a lot to like in Romano's profile to safely project him for another 30-plus saves in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Drawing interest from Philadelphia
The Phillies are displaying interest in Romano, who is recovering from elbow surgery, Jim Salisbury of PHLY Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The Phillies appear to be casting a wide net in their search for bullpen help and Romano is one of the more interesting relief arms on the free-agent market after he was non-tendered by the Blue Jays last month. The 31-year-old allowed 10 earned runs in 15 appearances in 2024, missing much of the season due to elbow issues. He is expected to be healthy in time for spring training and is a nice bounce-back candidate who posted a 2.37 ERA with 95 saves from 2021 to 2023.
