2026 Fantasy Outlook
The California native saw some modest gains last season. Smith accumulated five Top-10 finishes and even one pole position (Talladega). However, much like his teammate Todd Gilliland, there were limits to Smith's success. The No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford team returns pretty much unchanged from the last season. Ryan Bergenty is still crew chief and he'll once again team with Smith. The duo would like to do better than their 28th-place finish in the final driver standings, but there will be some limits to that ability to improve. In addition to superspeedway ovals, Smith seems to have some short track ability. He did grab some good finishes at Bristol, Richmond and Phoenix along the way. ANALYSIS
Smith would start 30th on the grid after qualifying was rained out and the field was set from the previous race's qualifying metrics. The Front Row Motorsports driver would not be deterred in his drive forward. Smith would come through the big crash at lap 116 mostly unscathed and that would be good for his prospects. He would battle to the finish and hold off Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to pick up his first Top 5 of the season.

Smith makes the jump over the Xfinity Series and straight from trucks into the Cup Series in 2024. Spire Motorsports is expanding to three teams in the upcoming campaign and they've signed Smith to pilot the new No. 71 Chevrolet. The 24-year-old talent has nabbed nine victories, one championship and two runner-up points finishes in the Craftsman Truck Series. Those near-100 starts have yielded a lot of accomplishments and hardware for the trophy case. Smith has nine Cup Series starts to his credit with eight of them coming in some part-time duty last season. He's not completely unfamiliar with a Cup car and that's a good thing. Smith even earned a surprising Top-10 finish with Front Row Motorsports in the Coca-Cola 600 last season. He'll make a bid for Rookie of the Year in 2024, but will face some challenges to give Josh Berry much competition competing with this new race team.

Everything came together for Smith to have a storybook season in 2022. The young FRM driver grabbed four victories, 14 Top-5 finishes and was the driver to beat most weekends of the season. It all culminated in a dominant season-ending performance at Phoenix where Smith won from the pole to capture the 2022 truck series title. He'll be back with this same team in the upcoming season and be tasked with the title defense. Chris Lawson will return at crew chief and the duo will look to build on the great season they had last year. With some of the truck series title contenders moving up the NASCAR ladder in the off-season, Smith has to be seen as the driver to beat in 2023.
Smith was one of the bigger free agent moves of the off-season. He jumps from GMS Racing to Front Row Motorsports in the upcoming season. Smith grabbed one win and 14 Top-10 finishes with his old team and that put him in the championship battle at Phoenix to end last season. He heated up to end last year and that put him in contention to win the title. Smith would pull up just a bit short, finishing fifth-place at Phoenix. However, it would place him second overall in the final driver standings. Smith will look to carry that success forward to FRM in 2022. Todd Gilliland drove this truck last season to one victory and 16 Top-10 finishes. So there's tons of potential here. Smith could push this team to new heights in the upcoming season.
Much like his GMS Racing teammate, Sheldon Creed, Smith came out of nowhere last season to win races and vie for the title. His rookie campaign in the Camping World Truck Series was quite impressive, claiming two victories and 13 Top-10 finishes. Smith would push Creed hard over those final three races of last season, claiming two runner-up and one third-place finish. However, that would be the difference in winning the championship and finishing runner-up. Smith will return to this strong race team in 2021 and once again be paired with the veteran crew chief, Kevin Manion. Entering the new season, GMS Racing seems to have all the momentum in this division of NASCAR and their young drivers appeared to be poised to reap the rewards.
Smith takes over the vaunted No. 21 team of GMS Racing this year. This is the same team that Johnny Sauter piloted to a championship in 2016 and 13 total victories between 2016 and 2018. The 20-year-old Californian will be paired with crew chief Kevin Manion and set out to capture the Rookie of the Year honors in the truck series. Smith raced an impressive 10-start schedule with JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series last season. He earned seven Top 10's in those 10 starts. Now Smith will continue his NASCAR development with a full-time ride in the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. There's a lot of potential in this driver and team lineup, and Smith could be under-ranked in the middle teens to start the season.
The California native and next young face in the Xfinity Series will take over the reins of the No. 8 JRM Chevrolet for the departed champion, Tyler Reddick. Smith will race in eight events spread throughout the upcoming year, starting in March at Las Vegas and ending at Dover in October. The 19-year-old talent is fresh off a dominant campaign in the ARCA Series where he nabbed four victories and 12 Top-5 finishes en route to a runner-up finish in the final driver standings of that racing series. Smith will share this ride with other drivers that have yet to be named at the time of this writing. This is a strong race team that has taken both William Byron and Tyler Reddick to the last two Xfinity Series titles. It will be a different story in 2019, but tons of potential for the future with some good finishes along the way as well as a lot of lessons learned.
