Vasily Podkolzin

Vasily Podkolzin

24-Year-Old Right WingRW
Edmonton Oilers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After diminishing returns in the previous two years with the Canucks, Podkolzin got things back on track in his first year with the Oilers. He had 24 points, 211 hits, 114 shots on net and 48 PIM over 82 regular-season games, and he chipped in another 10 points in 22 playoff outings. Podkolzin will be a restricted free agent next summer, and the challenge for him now is to find year-to-year consistency offensively while maintaining a healthy level of physicality without crossing the line on penalties too often. It's tough for a depth forward in Edmonton to make a fantasy impact, but Podkolzin saw some time on the second line, and if he can be there regularly, he's got a path to at least a bench spot for virtual squads. Scores in season-ending loss

Podkolzin scored a goal on three shots and added five hits in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Ducks in Game 6.
ANALYSIS
The Oilers had plenty of flaws in this first-round series, but Podkolzin's play was a benefit. He had three goals, three assists, 12 shots on net, 32 hits and a plus-5 rating over six contests against the Ducks. Podkolzin earned a 37-point regular season wihle adding 242 hits and 63 PIM over 82 appearances. He signed a three-year contract extension back in September, and that deal will kick in for 2026-27, cementing Podkolzin as a piece of the Oilers' middle six moving forward.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
Podkolzin has struggled at the NHL level in his last two seasons, after scoring 14 goals and adding 12 assists in 79 regular-season appearances as a 20-year-old rookie in 2021-22. The Russian forward has only four goals and five assists in 58 games in the prior two seasons, regressing to only two assists in 19 contests last year. Podkolzin had 28 points in 44 AHL games with Abbotsford, which likely factored into Edmonton's decision to bring him in via trade. Originally selected him 10th overall in 2019, his new team should be willing to wait on him as power forwards sometimes take longer to develop. He is probably not worth a fantasy spot at this time but might be worth a stash in dynasty or keeper formats.
Podkolzin's second NHL campaign didn't go so well, as the winger was limited to seven points, 52 hits and 41 shots on goal in 39 games last year. It'll be on him to earn his way into the top six, though his physical playing style may be best suited for a third-line role in the long run. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues can likely wait and see how he performs in training camp, but dynasty managers will want to be patient with the 22-year-old first-round pick who clearly still has more to offer than he's shown. Podkolzin probably shouldn't be expected to produce more than 35 points in 2023-24, but that could also come with 100-plus hits if he gets enough ice time.
Podkolzin, the No. 10 overall pick by Vancouver in 2019, arrived stateside last season and was an immediate producer for the Canucks. He tallied 14 goals and 26 points in 79 games despite playing the entire year at age 20. Projecting Podkolzin to fill a top-six role for Vancouver may be a stretch, but between his gritty style of play and ability to provide secondary scoring, he's an ideal depth player for the Canucks. Keep an eye on Podkolzin to see if he can take his game to another level in 2022-23.
