Past Fantasy Outlooks
Bellemare has bounced around in recent seasons, spending exactly two years each in Vegas, Colorado and Tampa Bay. He concluded his run with the Lightning by appearing in 73 of 82 games, managing four goals and 13 points. Now 38 years old, Bellemare inked a one-year, $775,000 deal with Seattle in free agency. He will again fill a bottom-six role for his new club, providing some grit in addition to logging key minutes on the penalty kill. There's no fantasy value here under any circumstances.
Bellemare has established himself as a quality bottom-six option in the NHL. He's scored double-digit points in six of his seven career seasons, including each of the last four. In two seasons with the Avalanche, he racked up 18 goals and 33 points while contributing heavily as a penalty-killer. The 36-year-old forward will likely assume that same role in 2021-22 with the Lightning. Bellemare will center Tampa Bay's fourth line and see plenty of usage while shorthanded, but his fantasy upside will be severely limited.
Bellemare was at his best in 2019-20, posting a career-high 22 points in 69 games. The French center was fueled by a career-best 10.6 shooting percentage, so there's a decent chance regression rears its head in 2020-21, especially since Bellemare isn't likely to see more than a fourth-line role. At 35 years old, Bellemare won't ever be a huge scoring threat, but he's solid defensively and should see a fairly consistent role for the Avalanche. Just don't expect him to crack the 20-point threshold again.
After spending parts of two seasons honing his craft with the Golden Knights, Bellemare looks forward to fulfilling his penalty-killing duties with Colorado. He's procured another two-year deal, with a $1.8 million annual rake counting as the highest earnings of his career. Last season, the Avalanche ranked 25th in defending the power play (78.7 percent), so look for Bellemare to be deployed heavily in those situations. He's averaged only 12:50 of ice time in the five years that he's been in the NHL -- including a three-year run with the Flyers -- which means the Frenchman, who's never topped 16 points in a season, requires maximum offensive efficiency to make a splash in fantasy hockey.
Bellemare was selected by the Golden Knights in the expansion draft having been unprotected by the Flyers. The 33-year-old didn't make much of an impact in a bottom-six role, managing six goals and 16 points in 72 games. Bellemare failed to find the back of the net during the team's historic postseason run and shouldn't be considered a noteworthy fantasy player entering 2018-19. The French forward plays on the fourth line and has never reached 20 points in his NHL career, making him only worth a look in deep settings.
