2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gone are the days of Staal playing close to 20 minutes per night and challenging for 30 goals in a season, but the role he plays as Carolina’s shutdown center is vital. Plus, he was able to piece together a solid offensive campaign while averaging 15:26 of ice time per game, picking up 36 points (13 goals, 23 assists) and a plus-15 rating in 2024-25. He also had only 16 PIM to his name, the second-fewest in his career. Staal remains a critical part of the Hurricanes' penalty kill as well and still plays a physical brand of hockey, recording 138 hits as a 36-year-old last year. However, he hasn’t gotten to 40 points since the 2017-18 season. For someone who has officially been phased out of the Hurricanes' power play, a 35-point season is likely the best you can hope for from the veteran pivot. Read Past Outlooks
Extends goal streak in Game 5
Staal scored a goal on three shots and added five hits in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
ANALYSIS
Staal scored for the fifth game in a row, a span in which he has six goals and an assist. He's the fourth player in Stanley Cup Finals history to open the series with a five-game goal streak, and the first to do that since Jean Beliveau in 1956. The legendary run has Staal up to eight goals, four assists, 35 shots on net, 84 hits and a plus-6 rating over 18 playoff outings. While playoff points leader Mitch Marner could still prevail, Staal is making a late case to get his name on the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Hurricanes can win one more game.

Staal plays an important role for the Hurricanes as the team's captain, and he's great defensively, but his limited offensive contributions diminish his use in most fantasy formats. He had 10 goals, 30 points, 44 PIM and 142 hits in 80 regular-season appearances in 2023-24. He'll turn 36 on Sept. 10, so if anything, his scoring total might decline slightly this season. Staal is a great source of faceoff wins, though, if your league uses that category. The Ontario native won 799 of his draws in 2023-24, giving him a 58.1 percent success rate -- the ninth time in the last 10 years that he's posted a winning percentage over 55.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
May be rested Tuesday
Staal wasn't on the ice for the game-day skate Tuesday, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports, indicating he'll sit out versus the Blue Jackets.
ANALYSIS
Staal has played in 80 of the Canes' 81 contests this season, so it shouldn't be a huge surprise to see him getting the night off when there isn't anything to play for. The veteran center has already reached the 30-point threshold for the fourth consecutive season and continues to produce in a bottom-six role.
