Signing with Washington
SWashington Commanders
March 11, 2026
Cross is set to sign with the Commanders, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Cross is an extremely durable safety, playing in all 17 regular-season games for the Colts over the 2025 season and logging 94 percent or more of the defensive snaps in 14 of those contests. The 24-year-old will be a youthful addition to a defense that has prioritized acquiring mainly older veteran players over the past few seasons.

Cross spent the first two years of his career primarily on playing special teams, but the Colts sought to upgrade on the play of Rodney Thomas at free safety heading into 2024. Cross won that competition convincingly and played 100 percent of defensive snaps in all but one game (he played 99 percent of snaps in Week 2) and finished ninth in the league with 146 tackles. Cross will remain a key cog in the Colts' defense and should continue to rack up tackles, with the offseason addition of Cameron Bynum being particularly impactful. Bynum will play a traditional center-field role while allowing Cross to step inside the box to support the run defense -- his primary strength. In 2024, he ranked fourth in run stuffs among safeties (per PFF) with 26, and he should have the chance to maintain and potentially even build on that number in 2025.
Cross began his sophomore season playing mostly on special teams, but he increased his role on defense after Indianapolis' bye in Week 11. He then stepped into a starting role for the final three games of the season due to an injury to Julian Blackmon (shoulder). He ended up racking up 39 tackles (24 solo), two pass breakups and one interception in 17 games. He'll compete with Rodney Thomas and Daniel Scott for the starting free safety job alongside strong safety Julian Blackmon.
Cross, a 2022 third-round draft pick, is a missile out of Maryland at 6-foot, 212 pounds with 4.34 speed, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him win a starting role after the retirement of Khari Willis. Cross probably fits better in the box than far downfield.

Impact addition for Commanders
SWashington Commanders
March 11, 2026
Cross, who recorded a second consecutive 100-tackle season in 2025 with the Colts, signed a two-year deal with the Commanders on Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Holder, citing NFL Network, adds that the total value of the contract is up to $14 million. Cross has recorded 266 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, 10 defensed passes, including four interceptions, and two forced fumbles across 34 regular-season games over the past two campaigns in Indianapolis. The 2022 third-round pick has displayed a penchant for both run support and blitzing, making him a versatile addition to a Commanders defense that struggled in 2025.
