Justin Reid

Justin Reid

27-Year-Old SafetyS
Kansas City Chiefs
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Reid has been entrusted with heavy action in the Chiefs secondary each of the last two seasons and has delivered his best IDP campaigns to date. He posted career-best marks in 2023 with 95 tackles (74 solo) and 3.0 sacks, adding an interception and a forced fumble to the ledger. Reid should maintain his status as a key piece on the back end this season and figures to garner plenty of attention in formats that utilize defensive players. He also figures to be the veteran in a young defensive backs room following the departures of L'Jarius Sneed and Mike Edwards this offseason. Read Past Outlooks

Reid recorded six tackles (five solo) during Sunday's 30-27 win at Carolina.
ANALYSIS
After Sunday's performance, Reid has now logged at least six tackles in four of the Chiefs' last six contests. He has set a pace of production that could allow him to amass 100 tackles over the course of the season, and he'll be trying to keep his foot on the gas in Week 13 versus the Raiders.

After spending his first four years as a pro with the Texans, Reid joined the Chiefs on a three-year, $31.5 million deal prior to the 2022 season. Reid lived up to the contract in his first year with the team, nearing his career high for tackles (88, set in his 2018 rookie season) by notching 83 stops, while adding a sack. The 26-year-old should operate in a similar role in 2023, though he'll need to familiarize himself with a new fellow starting safety in the wake of Juan Thornhill's departure in free agency.
After spending his first four NFL seasons with the Texans, Reid inked a three-year, $31.5 million contract to join the Chiefs' secondary in 2022. Reid has proven to be a willing tackler, racking up 83 or more tackles in each of his first three NFL campaigns. He's no slouch at getting his hands on the ball either, notching seven total interceptions in his first four NFL campaigns. He will take over Tyrann Mathieu's spot in the secondary and should start opposite Juan Thornhill.
As more of a center-fielding free safety than an in-the-box strong safety, Reid's talents probably don't go fully recognized by IDP scoring. He discourages targets more than he invites them, especially on a Houston defense with much easier targets elsewhere, and his tackle production was limited otherwise by the number of corner snaps he played last year. Reid is a very good athlete by cornerback standards and an elite one at safety, so he's often the most qualified candidate to take on a given coverage task, which doesn't necessarily lend itself to tackle opportunities. With all that said, his numbers from last year might mark something of a worst-case scenario, and Reid otherwise has more interception upside than most safeties. At 6-1, 207 with a 4.40 40, 36.5-inch vertical, 128-inch broad jump and 10.8 agility score, very few safeties cover ground like Reid, whose 1,838 defensive snaps to this point contain per-snap tackle and interception production that projects to roughly 90 tackles and three picks per 1,000 snaps.
The brother of Carolina's Eric, Justin is a hyper-athletic CB/S tweener with classic free safety traits rather than the big, strong look his brother provides. The younger Reid fell to the third round last year and already looks like a steal, as he emerged as a starter in October last season after outplaying Houston's incumbents in September. He's likely to see about 1,000 snaps and therefore improve on last year's tackle numbers, while his 10 passes defended hint at even more interception upside than his three from last year.
Reid was selected in the third round of the 2018 draft out of Stanford and will be part of the safety rotation behind Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson.

No concerns about contract

Reid believes details on a potential contract extension with the Chiefs will work themselves out, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Reid has been a mainstay in the Kansas City secondary for the last two seasons and is entering the final year of his current contract. Still only 27 years old, he should be in line for a substantial new deal, even in the modern game where safeties are generally not paid at the top of the market. Reid has expressed an interest in remaining in Kansas City, though it's not clear if contract talks have progressed.
