2026 Projections
Played through broken hand in 2025
Defensive line coach Joe Cullen said Wednesday that Karlaftis played multiple games with a broken hand in 2025, Pete Sweeney of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite the serious injury he apparently sustained prior to Week 11 at Denver, Karlaftis missed only one game last season, sitting out in Week 18 when the Chiefs were already eliminated from playoff contention. Now fully healthy, he projects to again play a huge role on the edge for Kansas City in 2026.

Kansas City's decision to exercise the fifth-year option in Karlaftis' rookie deal keeps him under contract through 2026. The 2022 first-round pick took a step backwards in 2024, with 35 total tackles including 8.0 sacks across 16 regular-season games, after tallying 47 tackles including 10.5 sacks in the same amount of contests in 2023. He'll look to rebound in Year 4, as he remains locked into a starting role in the Chiefs' pass-rush unit.

"Once this [draft] process ends, we'll be in discussions with [right guard] Trey [Smith] trying to get him done and then I'm sure at some point here [with] George and [cornerback] Trent [McDuffie]," general manager Brett Veach said Thursday. "We're going to have dialogue with them." Karlaftis has recorded 18.5 sacks over the last two seasons in 32 regular-season games, and he came up big during Kansas City's 2024 playoff run, racking up 4.0 sacks in three postseason contests, including 3.0 in a divisional-round win over the Texans.
