There was no doubt that James would remain a key part of the Chargers' defense under a new coaching staff in 2024, though his versatility did create some questions about exactly how he would be deployed by coach Jim Harbaugh. His usage in terms of run defense versus coverage remained similar to past years, though he played a career-high 250 snaps in the slot while playing his fewest snaps at free safety since his rookie season. That led to more limited tackle output, though James was used creatively as a blitzer to pick up 5.5 sacks. With Elijah Molden and Alohi Gilman still in the mix, the Chargers will once again have the ability to use James all over the field - but that's not necessarily a positive for his fantasy value.

Extension a high priority for Bolts
Signing James to a contract extension is a high priority for the Chargers before he becomes a free agent in 2027, GM Joe Hortiz said last week on the Up & Adams Show.
ANALYSIS
The star safety has recorded at least 90 tackles in each of the last five seasons for the Chargers while also racking up at least 2.0 sacks and five passes defended per year. James is set to make $17.5 million in 2026, and even though he turns 30 in August, a new deal could get him close to the top of the market at his position, which is currently defined by Kyle Hamilton's $25.1 million AAV with the Ravens.
