Adds to current contract
Heyward signed a one-year extension with the Steelers on Tuesday, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Heyward effectively signed a new contract worth $32.25 million over two years, including the first year guaranteed. This move also freed up $5.5 million in cap space for the Steelers, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Heyward will turn 37 years old in May but isn't showing any signs of slowing down, as he's coming off a strong season where he recorded 78 tackles (38 solo), including 3.5 sacks, and six pass breakups through 17 regular-season games (48.0 defensive snaps per game).

Heyward battled injury and was ineffective for much of 2023, causing many to project further decline in 2024. Instead, he played in all 17 games and returned to the 700 defensive snap plateau. Heyward's bounceback year wasn't based solely on volume, however, as he delivered 20 quarterback hits while also remaining dominant against the run (47 run stuffs, per PFF). Projecting a full repeat of 2024 would be quite optimistic given that Heyward is entering his age-37 season, but he's shown he's still capable of delivering strong production.
