2024 Tournament PreviewCoach Chris Jans has the Bulldogs back in the NCAA Tournament with a top-20 defense (per KenPom) that defends the perimeter at the sixth-best rate in the country. Mississippi State finished ninth in the SEC, but a five-game February winning streak, an upset of Tennessee in the conference tourney and non-conference wins against tournament teams Northwestern and Washington State was enough to punch its ticket. The midseason return of 6-11 Tolu Smith (15.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg) from a foot injury sparked the Bulldogs, as the fifth-year senior has nine double-doubles in 22 games. The X-factor, though, was the emergence of 5-10 freshman Josh Hubbard, who has averaged 20.1 points since entering the starting lineup Jan. 27 while playing both guard positions. Hubbard is virtually the only 3-point threat, shooting 35.8 percent on 293 attempts. The Bulldogs are sneaky good with the tools to pull of an upset or two.
