2025 Fantasy Outlook
The 2024 No. 3 overall pick was overlooked as a rookie. The Rockets prioritized winning over developmental minutes and made a surprise leap to the top of the Western Conference playoff picture. However, Houston lost to Golden State in the first round as a No. 2 seed, prompting dramatic changes this offseason. The Rockets shipped Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks to Phoenix in a package deal to land Kevin Durant. They also sent Cam Whitmore to Washington for draft capital, signed Fred VanVleet to a multi-year extension and added Dorian Finney-Smith and Clint Capela in free agency. However, VanVleet tore his ACL in late September and will likely miss the entire 2025-26 campaign. With four rotation players, including three starters and the team's 2024-25 leading scorer, out of the picture, Sheppard should have a clearer path to consistent minutes in Year 2. The most significant addition to replace the trio of departures was Durant, who has missed fewer than 20 regular-season games only once in the past five seasons. Sheppard is an obvious option for more playing time and usage, but he'll have to earn everything. Veteran Aaron Holiday will be Sheppard's primary competition for backcourt minutes, though rising star Amen Thompson will also have a lot of ball-handling duties. The only thing left for Sheppard to do is prove himself at the highest level. He starred in the G League last season, averaging 30.7 points, 7.3 assists and 2.7 steals while shooting 40.5 percent from deep across three appearances. He dominated lesser competition again at Summer League, totaling 46 points and eight steals in two contests before being shut down. Sheppard played at least 20 minutes in only five NBA games as a rookie, but he posted promising results, averaging 16.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.6 steals. Given his upside and projected rise in minutes in the aftermath of VanVleet's injury, Sheppard will probably go higher than his ADP in most drafts, and there's no reason he should fall past pick 150. He'll likely need to have a strong showing in training camp for the Rockets to trust him with a starting role to begin the campaign, as they are in win-now mode. Read Past Outlooks
Struggles in Game 6 defeat
Sheppard totaled 10 points (4-19 FG, 1-10 3Pt, 1-1 FT), one assist, two blocks and two steals over 36 minutes during Friday's 98-78 loss to the Lakers in Game 6 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
ANALYSIS
Sheppard struggled offensively during Friday's loss and reached the double-digit points mark only because of his shooting volume. He finished the series having averaged 12.2 points on just 30.7 percent shooting (including 29.6 percent from three on 9.0 3PA/G) along with 4.7 assists, 1.0 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 0.8 blocks over 32.2 minutes per contest. Sheppard saw his playing time increase shortly before and during the playoffs, but his role with the Rockets for the 2026-27 season could shrink due to the return of Fred VanVleet (knee).

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Sheppard was selected with the third overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Rockets. Sheppard should add a jolt of elite perimeter shooting to the Rockets while sharing reserve playmaking responsibilities with Amen Thompson. It's easy to envision Sheppard running two-man action with Alperen Sengun, or Sengun finding Sheppard for open looks coming off a variety of off-ball screens. The guard out of Kentucky is also a smart and active defender, though his 6-foot-2 frame will limit his upside on that side of the ball. Sheppard showed out in Summer League, averaging 20.0 points and 1.3 threes on 50/28/75 shooting, 5.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals, 1.3 blocks and 4.8 turnovers in 33.1 minutes. Despite Sheppard being a historically great three-point shooter in college, he used it to just supplement his game in Summer League. He was much more active from the mid-range, firing away when discarding his defender or freezing the defense in a pick-and-roll. Sheppard has enough potential to be worth taking with the No. 1 pick in keeper/dynasty formats, but his path to immediate minutes as a rookie is complicated and may limit his Year 1 potential.

Rockets high on him
The Rockets are high on Sheppard's potential and aren't open to trading him during the offseason, according to Ramona Shelburne and Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
Sheppard had some ups and downs in the 2025-26 season, but the Rockets still believe he can become an elite point guard once he reaches his full potential. The team feels he could develop into a player in the mold of Steve Nash, according to Shelburne and MacMahon, but other sources around the league believe Sheppard might end up more like Steve Kerr than Nash, a two-time MVP winner.
