Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Kenyon Lee Martin Jr. was born on January 6, 2001 in Los Angeles, California. The son of former NBA player Kenyon Martin -- the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft -- Kenyon Jr. attended two high schools in the Los Angeles area before spending one post-graduate year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Martin began his high school career at Chaminade College Prep before transferring to Sierra Canyon, where he teamed with Scotty Pippen Jr. and fellow 2020 NBA draftee Cassius Stanley. Initially, Martin committed to play college basketball at Vanderbilt University, but he ultimately opted to spend a post-graduate year at IMG Academy. At IMG, Martin averaged 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He scored 37 points during the National Prep Showcase and declared for the NBA Draft in March of 2020.

2020
Martin played a career-high 28.0 minutes last season, starting for the Rockets over the final three months. He played in all 82 games, coming in as the 184th-ranked player in standard formats. With averages of 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 0.9 combined steals and blocks, he served as a viable fantasy asset for much of the season, albeit one with limited upside. After being traded to the Clippers in the offseason, Martin finds himself in an uncertain situation. He will likely be battling Marcus Morris and Nicolas Batum for minutes at the power forward position. While both are more experienced, Martin provides them with a far more athletic option. To this point, his defensive abilities remain questionable, something he will have to improve should he hope to become a consistent fantasy contributor. He is an efficient scorer who runs the floor well, bringing pace to a team that could certainly do with a boost in that department. If he is listed as the starter to begin the season, he immediately moves into the standard league conversation.
Martin remained in a reserve frontcourt role for the Rockets last season. He's undersized (6-foot-6, 215 pounds) but often plays a big-man role. He took 57 percent of his shots at the rim last year -- in the 96th percentile for players classified as forwards. He converted well (66 percent) from that range and shot well on threes, hitting 0.8 per game on 35.7 percent. That resulted in 8.8 points in his 21.0 minutes per game, and he added 3.8 rebounds (1.0 offensive), 1.3 assists and 0.9 combined blocks-plus-steals. That resulted in a fantasy rank of 293rd on a per-game basis. This season, Martin may have trouble reaching that workload. Alperen Sengun will start at center, and Jabari Smith will be at power forward. Backup minutes will be up for grabs, and Martin will compete against Jae'Sean Tate, Tari Eason, Willie Cauley-Stein, Boban Marjanovic and others. The tough situation makes it extremely unlikely Martin will be relevant in standard leagues.
Martin made brief NBA appearances early last season before heading into the G League bubble, where he caught the attention of die-hard Rockets fans by averaging 17.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.7 assists. Once the bubble season concluded, Martin returned to the Rockets, where he was given a legitimate rotational role. He saw 23.7 minutes per game and averaged 9.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists. He also had solid shooting splits of 51/37/71. His upside became clear in games where he was given extended run. In games that Martin saw 30-plus minutes, he averaged 16.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 combined blocks-plus-steals. However, it doesn't seem that he'll have those types of opportunities in 2021-22. Houston bolstered its frontcourt depth by acquiring Daniel Theis and drafting Aperen Sengun. With Christian Wood, Danuel House and Jae'Sean Tate also in the mix for frontcourt minutes, there's not a ton of space for Martin to see consistent action. Fantasy managers in most redraft leagues can ignore Martin, but there's at least enough to be intrigued about for managers in dynasty/keeper formats.
Martin initially committed to play at Vanderbilt, but he later decided to opt for a postgraduate year at IMG Academy. There, he averaged 20 points and eight boards per game. He's an explosive athlete and an energizing presence, but his skillset needs to be refined for him to see any meaningful minutes in the league.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Considered trade chip
FPhiladelphia 76ers
December 4, 2024
Martin is Philadelphia's top trade candidate, Michael Scotto of Hoopshype reports.
ANALYSIS
The 76ers signed Martin to a two-year, $16 million contract during the offseason, though it's non-guaranteed for 2025-26. Scotto notes that his $8 million salary was designed with potential trade candidates in mind, making this an intriguing situation to monitor. Martin has seen increased run in recent games with the 76ers battling some frontcourt injuries, and he's seen at least 22 minutes in four straight contests with averages of 10.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks.
